Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Fleet Manager for the Road Department, the Automotive Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment utilized by the County Road Department.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Conduct repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, including a variety of vehicles such as cars, trucks, and lawn equipment.
2. Address major powertrain components including transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
3. Interpret blueprints and electrical diagrams to effectively troubleshoot and repair 12 & 24-volt electrical systems.
4. Install and maintain brake systems, suspensions, and hydraulic components.
5. Diagnose malfunctions and perform necessary repairs.
6. Execute maintenance tasks on both diesel and gasoline engines, including computer-controlled systems.
7. Install equipment such as snow plow frames and hydraulic systems.
8. Maintain a clean and organized workspace, tools, and equipment.
9. Prioritize tasks and adhere to maintenance schedules.
10. Conduct field service calls and assist in the repair process as needed.
11. Utilize welding and cutting tools for fabrication of equipment.
12. Perform bodywork and paint as required.
13. Repair steering and tire components.
14. Collaborate with fellow technicians to enhance productivity and efficiency.
15. Adhere to safety regulations and maintain accurate inventory records.
16. Participate in training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
17. Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with specialized training in automotive maintenance preferred. A minimum of three to five years of experience in a mechanic role is required, particularly in the maintenance and repair of road operation vehicles. Certification as a Master Auto/Truck Technician is preferred, along with a valid Michigan Operators License and CDL Class B with Air Brakes.
Working Conditions:
The position involves working near moving mechanical parts with exposure to loud noise levels, requiring hearing protection. The technician may work outdoors in varying weather conditions and will occasionally handle hazardous materials. Extended work hours and on-call availability may be necessary to address emergencies.
