Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Counselor to join our team at Duval County Public Schools. As a School Counselor, you will play a critical role in providing academic, career, and social/personal support to students, teachers, and parents.

New Hire Incentives

We are offering a range of incentives to new hires, including a $5,000 hiring bonus, $1,500 moving stipend, $1,000 hard-to-staff supplement, and $1,000 career ladder supplement.

Essential Functions

As a School Counselor, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and implementing a data-driven, comprehensive guidance program to meet the academic, career, and social/personal needs of students.
  • Conducting classroom guidance activities focused on academic, career, and social emotional learning.
  • Monitoring each student's state assessment requirements and course requirements for promotion and/or graduation.
  • Implementing the district career program to provide students with information on curriculum and specific programs, postsecondary opportunities, scholarships and financial aid, and career opportunities.
  • Making student referrals to school and community agencies and providing regular and appropriate feedback to teachers.
  • Offering developmental and preventive individual and group counseling for all students.
  • Conducting planned articulation and orientation programs for feeder schools.
  • Serving as a resource person for school staff on guidance-related activities and techniques.
  • Coordinating district/community counseling services conducted in the school, including the services of the student services team that serves the school.
  • Providing students, parents, and teachers with appropriate and necessary support, consultative services, and training.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • No prior experience is required, but a strong understanding of Florida Statutes governing promotion, graduation, state assessment program, compulsory school attendance, credits, Florida Virtual School, and home school is essential.
  • Certifications and licenses in Guidance and Counseling from the Florida Department of Education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

You will need to possess:

  • Knowledge of Florida Statutes governing promotion, graduation, state assessment program, compulsory school attendance, credits, Florida Virtual School, and home school.
  • Knowledge of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Exceptional Student Education services eligibility requirements.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software skills.
  • Ability to plan and implement a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Ability to devote additional hours beyond the workday for grading papers and preparation of lesson plans.
  • Ability to manage students.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
