Position Overview

This role is situated within the U.S. Department of the Interior, focusing on the management and care of wild equines. The selected candidate will be integral to the operations at a facility dedicated to the welfare of these animals.

Key Responsibilities

The position involves a variety of tasks essential for the effective functioning of the facility, including:

  • Preparing animals for various programs and events.
  • Ensuring daily feeding and care of the equines.
  • Facilitating compliance with adoption processes and private care placements.
  • Maintaining the facility and its equipment.
  • Engaging with the public to promote awareness and understanding of wild horse management.

This role demands a thorough understanding of animal husbandry practices, proficiency in operating machinery such as tractors and loaders, and the ability to ride and manage wild horses safely. Strong communication skills are also essential for effective interaction with team members and the public.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Background investigation may be necessary.
  • Compliance with Selective Service Registration Act is mandatory for male applicants.

Qualifications

While there is no specific duration of required experience, candidates must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of a Horse Wrangler independently. Relevant experience may include:

  • Riding and managing wild horses for various operational tasks.
  • Ensuring the safe handling of equines to prevent injuries.
  • Operating large trailers and vehicles for transporting animals and equipment.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must possess the ability to ride and rope horses or similar stock. Failure to meet this requirement will result in disqualification from the selection process.

Physical and Working Conditions

The role involves significant physical exertion, including lifting heavy materials and operating equipment in various weather conditions. Safety precautions must be adhered to at all times to mitigate risks associated with handling wild horses.
