Position Overview

This role is situated within the U.S. Department of the Interior, focusing on the management and care of wild equines. The successful candidate will engage in various operational tasks at a facility dedicated to the welfare of wild horses.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the daily operations of the facility, ensuring the well-being of up to 1,200 wild horses.
  • Performing animal care tasks such as feeding, grooming, and health monitoring.
  • Facilitating the adoption process and compliance with care placement standards.
  • Maintaining the facility and equipment to ensure a safe environment for both animals and staff.
  • Engaging with the public to promote awareness and education about wild horse management.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • A background investigation may be required.
  • Compliance with Selective Service Registration Act is necessary for male candidates.
  • Candidates must submit a resume and supporting documents prior to the application deadline.
  • An active real estate license or financial interest in firms with federal land interests is prohibited.
  • New federal employees may need to complete a probationary period.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is required.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.

Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate sufficient experience to perform the duties of an Equine Care Specialist without close supervision. Relevant experience may include:

  • Riding and handling wild horses for management tasks.
  • Ensuring safe handling practices to prevent injuries.
  • Operating horse trailers and heavy vehicles for transportation purposes.

Additional Requirements

This position necessitates the ability to ride and manage horses effectively. Candidates lacking this skill will not be considered further.

Physical Demands

The role involves significant physical exertion, including lifting heavy materials and performing strenuous tasks related to horse management.

Working Environment

The position requires working outdoors in various weather conditions and may involve exposure to hazards associated with animal handling.
