Become a vital part of the Parks and Recreation Team in South Lake Tahoe.

The City is actively seeking skilled lifeguards and swim instructors to join our community pool staff within the recreation and swim complex.

Enjoy part-time work with adaptable schedules in an engaging atmosphere. This role offers a wonderful opportunity to teach swimming while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for both visitors and residents.

No prior experience is required; however, candidates must obtain American Red Cross Certification for Lifeguarding and/or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification before commencing employment. Training for certification may be available for qualified applicants.

Head Pool Lifeguard / $ $ per hour
Recreation Instructor / $ $ per hour

New hires typically start at the initial step of the salary range, but exceptional experience may allow for a higher starting step.

Class specifications are designed to provide a descriptive overview of the range of responsibilities performed by employees in these roles.

Pool Lifeguard

All Lifeguards must possess American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Additionally, Lifeguards are required to complete Title 22-First Aid for Public Safety Personnel within their first year of employment. Candidates must also pass a basic swim test and in-water rescue drills to qualify for employment.


Lifeguards are tasked with monitoring pool activities and conducting rescues to assist weak or injured swimmers in reaching safety.

Responsibilities include enforcing water safety rules, tracking swimmers in the water, and administering first aid to those in need.

Lifeguards are also responsible for managing daily operations of the aquatic facility, reporting disturbances and emergencies to supervisors, performing general pool maintenance, participating in regular training sessions, and independently executing assigned tasks.



Head Pool Lifeguard


Head Lifeguards must have: American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Title 22-First Aid for Public Safety Personnel, and a minimum of two years of lifeguarding experience demonstrating increased responsibilities.

All Head Lifeguards must pass a basic swim test and in-water rescue drills to be considered for employment.

The primary duties of Head Pool Lifeguards include overseeing pool activities and conducting rescues for weak or injured swimmers.

Head Pool Lifeguards must meet all qualifications outlined for Pool Lifeguards, along with at least two years of lifeguarding experience with demonstrated increased responsibilities.


Additional Responsibilities:

The Head Lifeguard is expected to:

  • Provide leadership and supervision for Pool Lifeguards;
  • Oversee daily activities of aquatics staff and programs;
  • Prepare and maintain routine reports;
  • Coordinate swim lesson schedules and swim programs;
  • Manage inventory of equipment and supplies;
  • Act as a liaison between the public, staff, and office personnel;
  • Suggest improvements for programs;
  • Plan and facilitate staff meetings and training sessions;
  • Notify supervisors of disturbances, emergencies, and staff performance issues;
  • Assist in planning and organizing special events and facility rentals;
  • Support the manager as needed.


The Head Lifeguard represents an advanced journey-level classification within the Lifeguard series, distinguished by the performance of oversight duties at the facility with minimal guidance.

Head Lifeguards are expected to work independently while effectively problem-solving within the scope of their designated responsibilities.



Recreation Instructor (Aquatics)

The primary role of a Recreation Instructor is to deliver swim instruction for individuals of all ages and skill levels.

Instructors must exhibit an understanding of diverse teaching and learning styles and be capable of teaching fundamental Learn-to-Swim courses, including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-3, and private swimming lessons.

Recreation Instructors should possess knowledge of basic swim strokes (crawl, breast, back, side, and elementary back) as well as general water safety practices.

Applicants must hold a current American Red Cross Certification for Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or be willing to obtain certification or equivalent training within six months of employment.


Work Environment:

Work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor aquatic facility environment, subject to seasonal climate and weather conditions; involves working with slippery surfaces where water and swimming pool chemicals are frequently encountered; and may involve emergency situations.


Physical Requirements:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field setting; to sit, walk, stand, and swim for extended periods; bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch; reach with hands and arms; lift, push, and pull up to 200 pounds when responding to emergency lifesaving situations; possess dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool equipment; and maintain mental acuity to observe people and situations, responding calmly in emergencies.


Vision:
Ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing:
Ability to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction, and communicate effectively in person.
