POSITION SUMMARY:


The Secondary Literacy Support Specialist provides leadership, guidance, collaboration, and innovation in reading curriculum, instruction, and assessment at the secondary level, enabling students in grades 6-12 to derive the utmost benefit from the reading programs implemented at each tier of the multi-tiered system of support.

This role will assist the Coordinator of English Language Arts (6th-12th) in developing an effective secondary reading program aimed at enhancing reading proficiency for all students.

By planning, designing, and delivering ongoing, job-embedded professional development grounded in evidence-based reading research, the Secondary Literacy Support Specialist will enhance teachers' ability to provide high-quality reading instruction and implement any district-mandated reading programs with fidelity.

Additionally, this position will support school leaders in enhancing their professional knowledge and capacity to monitor and assist their school-wide reading initiatives.


This position is grant funded and thereby staffed year-to-year. This position reports to the Coordinator of English Language Arts (6th-12th). For compliance purposes, this position also reports to the Coordinator of Federal Programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Services (school-level): Provides continuous, job-embedded professional development in the science of reading to ensure that secondary reading educators are equipped to deliver high-quality instruction that prevents and addresses reading difficulties; offers ongoing, job-embedded professional learning in any district-funded reading initiatives; assists secondary reading educators in selecting, administering, and evaluating the outcomes of reading screeners, diagnostics, and progress monitoring assessments; aids secondary reading educators in implementing and overseeing the reading curriculum; provides coaching and mentoring to reading educators to foster trust and partnerships that enhance student achievement; models effective strategies and resources for teaching reading at the secondary level; coordinates and participates in school-level data meetings to ensure that intended outcomes are achieved and to provide leadership in identifying necessary modifications.

Direct Services (district-level): Continuously compiles pre-program, mid-program, and post-program data for program evaluation and professional development purposes; communicates the status of implementation of the reading program and students' progress towards reading achievement to district-level and community stakeholders; supports the monitoring of the reading program; assists with the selection of evidence-based reading resources tailored to meet the specific needs at each school site; serves as a training facilitator for personnel at the principal level and beyond; remains informed of the latest research in reading.

Professional Responsibilities:
Participates in regularly scheduled district and regional meetings; communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders; engages in vertical articulation of district K-12 instructional goals and objectives; assists with the implementation of various student enrichment programs.


All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services which are allowable under Title I, Part A.


KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree required.

Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience in the relevant content area required. Leadership experience is essential.

Evidence of mentoring and informal leadership activities with success in enhancing other educators' instructional skills to boost student learning.

Demonstrated ability to effectively facilitate professional learning for teacher groups and individuals.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Increase in student literacy achievement growth.

Improvement in professional capacity to deliver effective instruction.

Sustained, ongoing, job-embedded, and intensive professional learning communities.


Requires inter-division coordination; makes decisions and recommendations that affect the assigned division, but at times may impact others outside of the assigned division.

GaPSC certification at Level 5 or higher in the relevant content area or related field. Reading Endorsement required.

Completion of all applicable Special Georgia Requirements at the time of application is required.

Analytical:
Supervisor is available to review established broad objectives; independent judgment is required to review and approve major recommendations.


Requires regular, frequent contact with internal personnel of influence and decision-making responsibility to discuss issues of moderate importance; occasionally requires contact with district officials.

Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for collaborating with inter-organizational teams.


Responsible for multiple functions of instructional supervision with high-level accountability for effective operation and results.

Applies, recommends, and implements technology concepts to enhance the effectiveness of instruction and pedagogy.

Requires occasional travel to off-site training locations and district-level meetings.



NOTE:
This is a grade 28, 225-day position.
