Autism Support Educator

POSITION SUMMARY:
Instructs students in elementary, middle, or high school settings who are diagnosed with Autism, focusing on fundamental academic and life skills across various subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. This role may be designated based on subject matter expertise. Employs contemporary strategies and educational theories to design and execute lesson plans. This position reports to the Principal.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitates learning for students with Autism in both academic subjects and essential life skills. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials tailored to the individual achievement levels of students, as outlined in their Individualized Educational Plans (IEP), while providing instruction aligned with grade-level standards.
Creates course outlines and objectives in accordance with curriculum guidelines or state and local educational requirements. Monitors, assesses, and documents student progress, including reevaluation referrals and the development of IEPs.
Collaborates with other educational professionals, including teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, mobility specialists, and others.
Assists students with special assistive devices, including orthopedic aids necessary for mobility. Aids students in safely boarding and de-boarding from transportation services.
Conducts parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress, performance, and behavioral challenges; partners with parents/guardians to create and implement suitable special education programs for eligible students with disabilities. Participates in faculty meetings, professional development sessions, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
Performs all other duties as assigned to fulfill the responsibilities outlined above.
KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate educational field, preferably in Special Education or General Education, along with a teaching certificate in Special Education.
A minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience is preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
High Functioning Autism - Special Education General Curriculum & all five content areas (currently GACE Tests 081/088P-8) for High School Special Education General Curriculum and content-specific areas.
Low Functioning Autism - Special Education Adaptive Curriculum & all five content areas (currently GACE Tests 083/088) covering the Adaptive Curriculum P-12.

Utilizes, recommends, and implements technology to enhance the effectiveness of educational operations.
Normal classroom/school environment.
Must be capable of standing and walking for approximately seven (7) to seven and one-half (7.5) hours daily. Occasional travel to other educational locations may be necessary.
Moderate physical duties - Typically involves sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or bending.
Must be able to lift or carry up to 35 lbs unassisted and assist with heavier lifting or carrying (up to 100 lbs).
