Position Overview

Under general supervision, this role is responsible for enforcing animal regulations and managing the impoundment of stray animals within the jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enforce animal control laws, rabies management, and licensing obligations.
  • Conduct patrols to capture stray, unlicensed, or injured animals.
  • Humane euthanasia of animals that pose a threat to public safety or are beyond recovery.
  • Ensure compliance with local animal control ordinances and relevant federal and state legislation.
  • Remove deceased animals from public areas.
  • Maintain and operate department vehicles, reporting any issues as necessary.
  • Handle wildlife and livestock directly.
  • Assist in the disposal of deceased animals.
  • Investigate animal-related complaints and incidents of bites.
  • Keep accurate records of activities within the Animal Services division.
  • Issue citations and file reports on violations.
  • Respond to court summons and provide testimony as required.
  • Process specimens for rabies testing.
  • Assist in maintaining animal habitats and facilities.
  • Support animal adoption initiatives and community events.
  • Help locate lost pets.
  • Educate the community on responsible animal care and control.
  • Recommend improvements to programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of activities.
  • Communicate work-related updates to supervisors.
  • Adhere to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Participate in after-hours emergency response on a rotating schedule.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license with a clean driving record.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Preferred: Six months of experience in animal control or a related field involving daily animal handling.
Successful candidates must pass a post-offer drug test and comprehensive background checks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Animal Control Officer Basic certification from the Texas Department of State and Health Services is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Familiarity with animal control regulations and animal behavior.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with distressed or upset citizens.
  • Capability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Proficient in following verbal and written instructions.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies outside of regular hours.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle challenging situations.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The physical demands described here are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry equipment and animals weighing over 100 lbs multiple times daily.
  • Capability to work in various environments, including confined spaces and uneven terrains.
  • Ability to endure adverse weather conditions and exposure to potentially hazardous materials.
  • Experience handling various wildlife and livestock safely.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as walking, running, climbing, and kneeling.
  • Ability to walk significant distances while pursuing animals and carrying necessary equipment.
