JOB SUMMARY: The Construction Equipment Specialist is responsible for the safe operation and driving of machinery utilized in road construction and maintenance.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates a dump truck for transporting asphalt, gravel, dirt, and other materials essential for road and bridge construction and repair.
- Utilizes an asphalt distributor to apply hot asphalt sealant on road surfaces.
- Employs a roller to compact asphalt.
- Manages a street sweeper to remove debris and gravel from roadways.
- Operates a bulldozer for land clearing and moving earth, rocks, and trees.
- Handles a grader for ditch cutting, gravel spreading, and road grading.
- Uses a Rosco flush truck to clear culverts of obstructions.
- Operates a scraper for earth moving and land clearing.
- Utilizes front-end loaders, backhoes, track hoes, and track loaders for ditch cleaning, culvert installation, material loading, and other road construction tasks.
- Conducts daily safety inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment, completing checklists to document any issues.
- Performs minor repairs and maintenance tasks such as oil changes and lubrication to ensure equipment operates effectively.
- Engages in manual labor tasks such as raking and shoveling asphalt as needed.
- Documents daily work activities through written reports.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- May perform other related responsibilities as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties are performed outdoors with frequent exposure to various weather conditions. Attention to safety is critical while operating equipment and directing traffic to minimize injury risks. Evening and weekend work may be necessary during adverse weather or emergencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong understanding of techniques for loading and transporting heavy machinery and construction materials.
- Knowledge of road construction and maintenance processes.
- Familiarity with maintenance requirements for light to heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment.
- Awareness of safety protocols related to equipment operation and roadwork.
- Ability to produce concise narrative and numerical reports.
- Skill in inspecting equipment for operational integrity.
- Capability to perform basic maintenance and minor repairs on machinery.
- Proficiency in operating medium to heavy machinery including asphalt distributors, rollers, street sweepers, bulldozers, mowers, flush trucks, scrapers, front-end loaders, backhoes, track hoes, track loaders, graders, and dump trucks.
- Competence in using hand tools.
- Manual dexterity to operate machinery controls.
- Ability to frequently turn torso and head to monitor equipment and surroundings.
- Visual acuity to ensure safety and efficiency in work.
- Capacity to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to maintain alertness and safety while working.
- Capability to concentrate for extended periods.
Completion of grade school; significant experience in operating medium to heavy construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Requirements:
- Must possess a valid Arkansas Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A, or be able to obtain one within six months of employment. Some positions may require the N (Tank Vehicle) endorsement.
- Subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with US Department of Transportation regulations.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a job-related physical and a motor vehicle report check.
