Job Summary:

The Engineering Research Specialist employs fundamental principles, practices, and methodologies within a specific field of expertise to conduct diverse scientific investigations necessitating the application and modification of established techniques, protocols, and standards.

This role involves evaluating, selecting, and implementing standard scientific methodologies to complete a variety of research tasks. Responsibilities include executing various research initiatives, conducting experiments, drafting research proposals, and composing technical documents and research summaries.

Additional Department Summary:
The position operates on an externally funded initiative under the guidance of a faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. The project focuses on the development of a system that encompasses both hardware and software for control and management algorithms.

The initiative is anticipated to involve the design, testing, and demonstration of power electronic systems hardware, including power converters with capabilities exceeding 10 kW and/or voltages reaching up to 1000 V, advanced control mechanisms for power electronic systems, mixed-signal power controllers, electric vehicle rapid charging solutions, and Lithium-Ion battery energy storage systems.

This role will engage in the development and validation of this system, manage laboratory equipment and tools, prepare reports, and assist in laboratory oversight, maintenance, and safety protocols.

Responsibilities regarding laboratory safety will encompass the secure storage, utilization, and disposal of batteries and other materials, along with providing safety supervision to laboratory users.

Willingness and ability to acquire additional skills necessary for the project and to stay current with cutting-edge technology to support the initiative are essential.


Required Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree and two (2) years of research experience; OR a master's degree with some research experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.

Willingness and ability to learn new skills pertinent to the project and to maintain proficiency with the latest technology are crucial.

Continuity of this position is contingent upon performance evaluations and the availability of external funding for the project.

Skills and Knowledge:

Proficiency in the development, testing, and demonstration of power electronic systems hardware, including power converters with capabilities exceeding 10 kW and/or voltages up to 1000 V, advanced control systems for power electronics, mixed-signal power controllers, rapid charging systems for electric vehicles, and Lithium-Ion battery energy storage.

Strong electrical skills and competent mechanical abilities are required. The ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive experience in one or more technical or research domains relevant to the project.
