Job Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a proficient Analytical Chemist to become a vital part of our team. This role will be situated within the Analytical Chemistry Research Laboratory, primarily focusing on pharmacological and toxicological analyses. The ideal candidate should possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent expertise in Chemistry or a related discipline, alongside a minimum of 2 years of practical experience with ICP-MS and LC-MS/MS technologies. The Analytical Chemist will be instrumental in executing analytical evaluations, developing methodologies, analyzing data, and compiling reports, ensuring the delivery of superior results to bolster the state's research endeavors. This position requires the individual to be the main operator of the laboratory and its equipment, with a strong emphasis on safety protocols. Experience in intricate sample preparation, particularly with biological samples and complex matrices, is essential. Training in novel techniques will be provided as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary aim of this role is to effectively manage the Analytical Research Laboratory. The key responsibilities include:
1) Overseeing the daily operations of the Analytical Research Laboratory with minimal oversight, demonstrating the ability to work autonomously while prioritizing safety.
2) Serving as a technical authority in analytical chemistry for various stakeholders, including principal investigators, project leaders, toxicologists, research personnel, and graduate students across diverse research fields.
3) Crafting and validating tailored analytical methodologies utilizing laboratory instruments according to client specifications, with meticulous attention to detail. The outcomes generated will significantly influence research initiatives and their associated funding prospects.
4) Conducting elemental and trace organic analyses using ICP-MS and LC-MS/MS across various sample matrices as required, including geological, biological, and polymeric samples. The candidate must be adept at analyzing, documenting, and organizing resultant data in a client-appropriate format.
5) Maintaining and supporting laboratory instruments, which includes calibration, documentation, and management of service contracts to ensure high-quality data output.
6) Managing the financial aspects of the laboratory service center, including procurement of laboratory supplies, coordinating project pricing, and generating final invoices for client billing.
7) Undertaking additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.
A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS and/or ICP-MS operations, with supplemental training available as needed.
Strong analytical capabilities with the aptitude to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.
Proficient in the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials, including concentrated acids, organic solvents, and pharmaceuticals.
Experience in data management and ensuring redundant backups.
Familiarity with complex sample preparation techniques.
Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree or higher in Chemistry or a related field.
At least 5 years of hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS.
At least 5 years of hands-on experience with ICP-MS.
Experience in method development and validation.
Familiarity with sample preparation techniques such as liquid/liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, and microwave acid digestion.
Experience in the creation and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and compliance requirements (e.g., FDA, EPA).
Prior experience in a research environment.
Proficiency in additional analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS, HPLC).
Experience in toxicological and pharmacological analysis of biological samples.
Proficiency in budgeting and invoicing for client projects.

Additional Information:

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal conviction check.
