POSITION SUMMARY:

A registered professional nurse plays a crucial role in identifying and addressing health-related responses to actual or potential medical issues. This includes services such as case identification, health education, and counseling. Nurses are tasked with providing interventions that support or restore life and well-being, as well as executing medical directives from licensed healthcare providers. As a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the nurse conducts comprehensive assessments, evaluates physical health needs, makes necessary referrals, manages medication in collaboration with psychiatrists, and offers a variety of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts a thorough evaluation of the client's overall condition, developing, reviewing, and adjusting nursing intervention plans to align with the client's comprehensive treatment strategy.
  • Ensures that nursing intervention plans take into account the client's cultural and ethnic background, customs, needs, beliefs, and primary language.
  • Creates nursing assessments that reflect the holistic needs of each client, considering psychological, physiological, social, ethnic, cultural, educational, and spiritual dimensions.
  • Supervises the direct implementation of nursing care to ensure adherence to the nursing intervention plan and overall treatment/service strategy, modifying the plan as necessary based on client needs.
  • Engages in team meetings, contributing nursing insights to the development and execution of treatment/service plans.
  • Coordinates nursing care activities with other professional disciplines to ensure consistency and integration with the overall treatment/service plan.
  • Provides guidance to other clinical staff regarding nursing standards of practice and procedures.
  • Offers consultation on nursing-related matters to other staff and administrators.
  • Delivers health education and teaching for clients and their families.
  • Participates in risk management and quality assurance initiatives related to health issues.
  • Conducts counseling sessions, guided by other qualified professionals, utilizing principles of communication, human behavior, and psychiatric nursing.
  • Participates in team and administrative meetings.
  • Manages medical supplies and equipment effectively.
  • Provides emergency care as needed.
  • Facilitates crisis intervention.
  • Monitors medication effects and side effects, documenting observations accurately.
  • Conducts educational sessions and group discussions on various health topics, including medication effects, well-being, coping strategies, and behavioral health issues.
  • Engages in community activities as a mental health advocate.
  • Participates in professional development activities to enhance personal skills and knowledge.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid license and current registration to practice as a registered professional nurse in New York State; preference for candidates with at least one year of post-RN licensure clinical nursing experience working with individuals with mental health challenges.
