Position Summary:
The Community Engagement Specialist plays a vital role in connecting with individuals experiencing homelessness in the community. Utilizing a harm reduction strategy, this position involves proactive outreach efforts, responding to community inquiries, assisting with housing solutions, and employing motivational interviewing techniques to meet clients in their current circumstances. Collaboration with the Manhattan Outreach Consortium (MOC) is essential to this role.

Work Schedule:
Weekends and select weekdays

Compensation:
$21 per hour

Key Responsibilities:
As part of a dedicated outreach team, your responsibilities will include:
  • Engaging with individuals in designated areas known for high rates of homelessness.
  • Promoting services and guiding clients as needed.
  • Responding to requests from community partners and agencies.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with local stakeholders.
  • Addressing community inquiries regarding unsheltered individuals.
  • Conducting safety assessments and advocating for necessary services.
  • Documenting client interactions and reporting on outreach activities.
  • Assisting in the training of new staff members.
  • Operating outreach vehicles safely.
  • Participating in emergency outreach efforts during extreme weather conditions.
  • Engaging in regular counts of homeless individuals in the area.
  • Being available for holiday shifts as required.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Experience working with individuals facing mental health challenges or homelessness is preferred.
  • Ability to adapt in a dynamic work environment.
Technical Proficiency:
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and outreach-related software.
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent walking and standing required.
  • Occasional lifting of items up to 30 lbs.
Work Environment:
  • Work conducted both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Primary duties performed in lower Manhattan.
  • Must be comfortable driving in urban traffic.
Union Information:
This position is part of a unionized workforce, governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement that outlines employment terms, including wages and benefits. Membership in the union entails regular dues deducted from paychecks.
