ABOUT THE ROLE
The Community Engagement Specialist (CES) at INCLUDEnyc is dedicated to driving change within educational systems, emphasizing a thorough understanding of disability regulations and special education practices, effective family involvement, and fostering inclusive learning environments.
The CES collaborates with fellow INCLUDEnyc Family Educators and external stakeholders to create and implement technical support and professional development initiatives aimed at enhancing educational outcomes for students with disabilities. The primary focus is on early childhood (ages birth to third grade) and/or school-age (ages 5 to 21), with opportunities to engage with both teams based on expertise, interest, and current staffing requirements. Key stakeholders include families, school leaders, educators, community organizations, and professionals serving children with disabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:
- Act as the primary borough project leader for the respective NYSED OSE FACE Center.
- Deliver professional development and technical support in partnership with external organizations, utilizing NYSED's established processes.
- Work collaboratively with regional partners, including educational leaders and administrators, to enhance family and community engagement within schools and educational entities.
- Establish and nurture partnerships with schools and community organizations.
- Facilitate group training sessions and workshops on various topics related to disability and special education.
- Provide direct support to families and professionals by helping them clarify issues, overcome obstacles, and identify actionable steps.
- Research and supply information resources for youth, families, and professionals.
- Assist with other program initiatives and support professionals as necessary.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Master's degree in education, social work, or a related field (contractually required).
- A minimum of 4+ years of experience in delivering professional development and/or technical assistance (contractually required).
- Comprehensive knowledge of the special education landscape in NYC and familiarity with NYC public schools, with experience in one or more of the five boroughs.
- Experience in educational program design and/or adult learning methodologies.
- Background in family engagement and an understanding of family perspectives within educational systems.
- Ability to navigate diverse perspectives, needs, and challenges when collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills in English; additional fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or Haitian Creole is preferred.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities with a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
- Adaptability to shifting deadlines and priorities.
- Creative problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Apps for Business (Gmail, Docs/Drive/Calendar), and Salesforce (preferred).
- Willingness and ability to travel intra-day and work occasional evenings and weekends to provide in-person services.
- Demonstrated commitment to INCLUDEnyc's mission of fostering positive outcomes for young New Yorkers with disabilities.
