Position Summary:
Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking a dedicated Animal Care Specialist.

This role is under the supervision of the Animal Resources Manager and collaborates with fellow animal care personnel to ensure the well-being of research animals within the WMed Vivarium.

The individual may be required to perform essential technical tasks (such as blood sampling) to achieve research objectives and to uphold the health standards of the animals.

Support will be provided to the Animal Resources Manager and the Assistant Dean for Laboratory Animal Resources as necessary to guarantee that the facility and animal care program adhere to all regulatory standards and maintain AAALAC accreditation.

Training will be offered as required.

Key Responsibilities:
Ensure a safe and hygienic environment for all laboratory animals.


Monitor, document, and maintain comprehensive records regarding any clinical anomalies in the laboratory animals, their living conditions, and their daily care routines.


Execute fundamental care and husbandry tasks for laboratory animals in compliance with all relevant guidelines, policies, and regulations; this includes (but is not limited to) cleaning and sanitizing enclosures, observing animal behavior, providing nourishment and hydration, and assisting with colony management as needed.

Accurately and consistently document detailed information about each animal when necessary.

Maintain records, gather data, compile findings, and prepare reports as requested.

Ensure that support is available for animal health assessments and veterinary medical interventions as directed by the Attending Veterinarian.

Assist veterinarians or researchers with animal evaluations and procedures when required.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A degree in biology, animal science, or a related scientific field is preferred.

Prior experience in an academic research environment involving animal care is advantageous.

Familiarity with scientific principles and animal husbandry practices is desirable.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective verbal and written communication abilities, are essential.

Proficient computer skills are necessary, including the capacity to learn new software for maintaining accurate animal records.

Ability to perform tasks independently with minimal supervision is required.

Strong organizational skills and the capability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously are important.

Attention to detail and data accuracy is crucial.

Must be able to complete an annual N95 mask fit-testing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


The physical demands outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully execute the essential functions of this position.

The employee must be capable of performing a combination of sitting, standing, and walking.


Must possess the ability to hear within a normal range and have the physical dexterity to operate basic office equipment.

Occasionally lift an average of 35 pounds.

Occasionally push, pull, or maneuver wheeled items weighing up to 300 pounds.

A pre-employment physical examination is required.
