POSITION SUMMARY

This role is dedicated to safeguarding lives and property by engaging in firefighting and rescue operations during various emergencies, including fires, technical rescues, medical crises, hazardous material incidents, and disaster responses. Duties are generally performed following established policies and procedures, yet successful execution requires initiative and a comprehensive understanding of firefighting methods, fire prevention strategies, rescue operations, and emergency medical practices. This non-exempt position operates under the guidance of a Company Officer, Group Supervisor, or Incident Commander.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responds promptly to fire alarms and other emergencies in various structures, including commercial and residential buildings; ascends stairs while carrying firefighting tools or medical equipment; conducts search and rescue operations to locate occupants; operates and manages fire suppression systems within buildings.
  • Utilizes personal protective gear; works in confined spaces; deploys hoses and water streams; raises and climbs ladders; employs chemical extinguishers and other firefighting tools.
  • Performs duties for extended periods while using self-contained breathing apparatus in high temperatures and low visibility conditions.
  • Ventilates structures based on applied knowledge; rescues victims from severe accidents or fires; provides emergency medical assistance to injured individuals; engages in property conservation efforts; aids in post-fire cleanup.
  • Maintains physical fitness levels necessary to meet state and departmental requirements, ensuring capability to perform all job functions.
  • Responds to emergencies requiring diverse medical skills, including administering oxygen, performing CPR, and providing emergency medical care.
  • For those certified as Paramedics, under physician directives, may administer intravenous solutions, perform intubations, and operate complex medical equipment.
  • Safely drives department vehicles to and from emergency scenes, adhering to departmental policies.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of apparatus, equipment, inventory, and maintenance logs.
  • Communicates effectively through various mediums, including written reports and radio communications during emergencies.
  • May operate heavy-duty fire apparatus, directing hose connections and ensuring proper pressure and water flow.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: This position requires availability to work during emergencies, which may involve irregular hours and assignments outside of the normal work location.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess and maintain Firefighter certification in the State of Georgia or NPQ Firefighter I or II Certification.
  • State of Georgia or National Registry EMT Certification is required; Paramedic certification is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider or Instructor certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification for Paramedics.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications within six months of hire.
  • Must meet ongoing requirements established by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.

Other/Special Requirements:

  • Comprehensive background investigation, including criminal history and financial checks.
  • Satisfactory results from a high-risk medical evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse testing.
  • Must meet physical agility and medical fitness standards as per NFPA 1582.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia within three months of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role involves heavy physical activity, requiring the ability to exert significant effort, including climbing, balancing, and lifting heavy objects. Candidates must also be able to perceive various sensory signals and communicate effectively.
