REPORTS TO: Director of Capital Projects

SALARY: $120K - $130K

LOCATION: New York, NY

SCHEDULE: In-person four (4) days per week and one (1) remote day per week

POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of the Director of Capital Projects, the ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR will spearhead the energy management initiatives to bolster and promote the sustainability objectives of the School of Visual Arts (SVA). This role involves assessing, managing, and enhancing heating, cooling, and water usage across a diverse portfolio of 1M square feet across multiple facilities, alongside overseeing the campus energy monitoring system. Collaboration with capital and facilities teams is essential to identify and implement optimal practices for efficient equipment functionality, formulate capital projects, and develop energy management programs while training staff on effective energy, water, and utility management strategies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Establish and uphold a systematic, efficient, and dependable energy management framework.
  • Supervise energy assessments and coordinate initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and minimizing expenses.
  • Collaborate with Facilities personnel to devise and execute a comprehensive energy reduction strategy.
  • Formulate project outlines, timelines, and budgets; manage operational shutdowns, contractor access, and conduct regular site visits to ensure project completion meets quality, cost, schedule, and safety standards.
  • Engage with consultants to create standards, protocols, design specifications, and enhancements for energy management systems.
  • Develop capital plans to achieve regulatory compliance economically and effectively, including adherence to local energy regulations and SVA energy initiatives.
  • Work with Facilities to create projects and training that enhance the control, efficiency, and operational flexibility of building management systems across the campus.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings through grants, incentives, rebates, tax benefits, and financing options.
  • Oversee the integration of the Campus Energy Dashboard, managing energy and utility data while educating occupants to influence behaviors and reduce consumption.
  • Manage data related to energy performance metrics, including historical usage, monthly consumption, annual statistics, and energy use intensity comparisons.
  • Foster strategic relationships with key utility providers and energy reporting vendors, managing the Accounts Receivable process for utility bill transactions.
  • Fulfill project reporting obligations with relevant energy management programs.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and collaborative relationships with all stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in energy management and related capital projects.
  • Familiarity with energy optimization practices.
  • Knowledge of local regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of local incentive programs.
  • Familiarity with construction documentation and trades.
  • Strong data management and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders and maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Self-motivated with a proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects concurrently.
PREFERRED:
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Energy Manager or LEED AP.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) accreditation.
  • Experience with new energy management systems.
  • Experience in facilities management within higher education.
  • Experience in educating groups about new concepts and resources.
  • Proficiency in Google Apps, Microsoft Office, and energy management software.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Willingness to conduct periodic inspections of site conditions and project progress, including climbing stairs and accessing mechanical and electrical rooms.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs and working in confined spaces.
  • Willingness to work in both office and field environments.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work outside of standard office hours.
