Position Overview:

The Materials Characterization Engineer focusing on CAE is tasked with delivering comprehensive materials analysis, data interpretation, and the creation of sophisticated design data essential for both internal and external stakeholders. This role is pivotal in supporting CAD/CAE simulations and structural evaluations. Key characterizations include thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties for mold flow assessments, alongside static and dynamic tensile/flexural evaluations, creep and fatigue testing, compression assessments, and additional analyses that underpin stress-strain simulations and mechanical performance evaluations at elevated strain rates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute mechanical materials characterization and various testing protocols to produce high-quality data for internal and external clients, while continuously enhancing equipment and testing methodologies.
  • Collaborate closely with CAE Design Engineers for materials sampling, data processing, analytical review, and report generation.
  • Facilitate specialized materials characterization, including static stress-strain, high-speed tensile, flexural, and compression testing, as well as creep, relaxation, shear, and fatigue assessments.
  • Conduct necessary material testing for injection molding simulations, supporting research and development analytical testing such as DSC, TGA, and TMA.
  • Act as the primary contact for outsourcing material characterization, managing quotes, coordinating with PAD Engineers for resin samples, and ensuring the accuracy and formatting of tested data.
  • Provide supplementary support to CAE Design Engineers in customer mold filling simulations utilizing Moldflow or similar software.
  • Assist the PAD and Business teams in generating advanced design data.
  • Support sales, marketing, and business development initiatives to promote LyondellBasell products and innovations as required.
  • Engage in additional product development activities as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in fields such as Polymers, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Master's degree preferred in the aforementioned disciplines.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in polymer materials characterization, with proficiency in operating advanced mechanical characterization instruments and testing protocols for quality data generation. An advanced degree in the relevant fields may substitute for the required experience.
  • Experience with injection molding simulations using Moldflow or similar software is preferred.

Language Proficiency: English; additional languages are a plus.

  • In-depth knowledge of polymeric materials, including mechanical properties, design lifespan, viscoelasticity, rheology, stress-relaxation, and fatigue behavior.
  • Familiarity with the injection molding process for thermoplastic polymers, ideally with hands-on experience in equipment operation.
  • Proficient in model development using CAD/CAE software and tooling design for injection molding processes.
  • Ability to convey test results in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Knowledge and experience in polymer blending and/or compounding processes are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
