Lansing, Michigan, United States LyondellBasell Full time

Company: LyondellBasell

Position Overview:

The CAE Materials Characterization Engineer plays a crucial role in delivering comprehensive materials analysis, data interpretation, and the development of sophisticated design data essential for both internal and external stakeholders involved in CAD/CAE simulations and structural evaluations. Key characterizations include thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties for mold flow assessments, alongside static and dynamic tensile/flexural data, creep and fatigue metrics, and compression analysis, all aimed at supporting stress-strain simulations and evaluating mechanical performance under high strain rates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough mechanical materials characterization and testing to produce high-quality data required by stakeholders, while continuously improving equipment and testing methodologies to enhance data generation capabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with CAE Design Engineers for material sampling, data processing, analysis, and the creation of detailed reports.
  • Support specialized materials characterization efforts, including static stress-strain, high-speed tensile, flexural, and compression testing, as well as creep, relaxation, shear, and fatigue assessments.
  • Prepare and execute material testing necessary for injection molding simulations, supporting research and development analytical testing, including DSC, TGA, and TMA.
  • Act as the primary contact for outsourcing material characterization, obtaining quotes, coordinating with PAD Engineers for resin samples, and ensuring the accuracy and formatting of tested data.
  • Assist the CAE Design Engineer in customer mold filling simulations using Moldflow or similar software, providing supplementary support as needed.
  • Contribute to the generation of advanced design data in collaboration with PAD and business teams.
  • Support sales, marketing, and business development initiatives to promote LyondellBasell products and innovations.
  • Engage in additional product development activities as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Polymers, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering. A Master's degree in these fields is preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in polymer materials characterization, with proficiency in operating advanced mechanical characterization instruments and testing protocols. An advanced degree may substitute for the required experience.
  • Experience with injection molding simulations using Moldflow or similar software is preferred.

Language Requirements: Proficiency in English; additional languages are a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of polymeric materials, including mechanical properties, design life, viscoelasticity, rheology, stress-relaxation, and fatigue.
  • Familiarity with the injection molding process of thermoplastic polymers, with hands-on experience in equipment operation being advantageous.
  • Experience in model building with CAD/CAE software and tooling design for injection molding processes.
  • Ability to articulate and clarify test results in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Knowledge of polymer blending and/or compounding processes is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Competencies: Building Partnerships, Delivering Results, Driving Innovation, Growing Capabilities, Promoting Inclusion, Technical Skills.

Must be at least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without visa sponsorship.
