Position Overview:

The Safety Systems Engineering Specialist will deliver technical support for the design, maintenance, operation, and repair of safety and operational systems at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL).

PPPL, a distinguished U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, is at the forefront of research and innovation in fusion energy—a clean, safe, and virtually inexhaustible energy source. In alignment with national priorities, PPPL is expanding its focus beyond fusion energy to include microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Every team member has the opportunity to contribute significantly to our mission through various roles in science, engineering, technology, or professional services. We are dedicated to attracting and nurturing individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

Functional Safety Engineering (70%):

  • Establish and supervise maintenance, testing, and repair operations for safety and operational systems. Create comprehensive procedures, specifications, drawings, and training materials to guarantee safe and reliable system performance throughout its life cycle.
  • Manage operator training, operations, and troubleshooting for safety and interlock systems, including safety-class PLC-based access control, fixed gas detection systems, and various safeguards supporting experimental plasma research.
  • Ensure that all technical documents, including procedures and drawings, are precise and up-to-date, adhering to stringent management of change and configuration management protocols.
  • This role will primarily focus on supporting National Spherical Torus eXperiment Upgrade (NSTX-U) systems, with additional support for smaller experiments at PPPL.

Engineering Operations Support (30%):

  • The incumbent will be expected to prepare for operational roles such as Chief Operating Engineer and Shift Supervisor.
  • Coordinate the startup, routine operation, and shutdown of unique high-power pressure, vacuum, and electrical systems.
  • Oversee the operation of the NSTX-U device, including initiating each operational pulse.
  • Ensure that all operations remain within the defined safety parameters for the facility.
  • Respond to fault conditions affecting NSTX-U operations and safety protocols.
  • Facilitate effective communication across the operational team during all phases of operations.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline is required.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in an industrial, military, or national laboratory research environment is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in functional or machinery safety engineering is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of individuals, from maintenance teams to research partners.
  • Familiarity with Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) and electrical safety standards is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in applying functional safety standards such as IEC 61508/61511.
  • Experience with radiological safety measures, including nuclear shielding, is beneficial.
  • Competence in preparing technical documentation, including operational, maintenance, and installation procedures, is desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interface effectively with a variety of scientific and technical personnel.

Certifications and Licenses:

Demonstrated expertise in functional or machinery safety engineering through industry certifications is preferred:

  • Exida Functional Safety Professional (FSP), Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP), or Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE).
  • UV FS Engineer.
  • B11 Licenses Machinery Safety Specialist (LMSS).

Physical Requirements:

  • Full or corrected vision, with the ability to perceive depth and color accurately, and perform occasional close work in low light conditions.
  • Capability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Full hand, arm, and leg dexterity and coordination.
  • Ability to work near static magnetic fields without medical restrictions.
  • Willingness to climb ladders and engage in continuous walking, standing, or sitting.
  • Work in environments with standard industrial hazards, including confined spaces and elevated areas.
  • Regularly wear protective clothing and equipment, including hard hats and safety glasses.

Working Conditions:

  • Most tasks will be conducted in PPPL facilities, with potential vendor visits as needed for ongoing projects.
  • Standard working hours will generally be during the first shift, with possible second shift requirements based on operational schedules.
  • Occasional off-hours response to emergencies or alarms may be necessary.
  • Work may involve confined spaces and the use of fall protection and other job-specific personal protective equipment.

PPPL is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
