Job Summary

This role is responsible for providing high-quality patient care and support in the emergency department. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in basic and advanced life support, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain patients' vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, and understand normal ranges and changes.
  • Inform RNs or physicians of changes in vital signs and collect blood, urine, saliva, and stool samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Insert Foley catheters, perform straight catheters, provide wound care, and fit patients for casts and/or hard splints, crutches, and other devices.
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs and provide instruments to doctors and nurses as they perform procedures on patients.
  • Assist with the safe movement of patients, applying principles of safe patient handling, and assist with admitting patients into the ER, scheduling patient transfers, and reinforcing patient education/discharge instructions as given by the RN.
  • Apply, check, and document restraints as directed by the RN or physician and maintain patient charts, respond to phone calls, maintain daily assignment boards, provide equipment care/cleaning, and perform errands associated with patient care.
  • Provide accurate information about the patient to the interdisciplinary team and promote the mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, adhering to Service Behavior Standards.
  • Demonstrate and adhere to the standards of infection prevention and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of Basic EMT training program or Paramedic Training in the state of practice/Colorado state
  • Current Basic EMT or Paramedic license in the state of practice/Colorado state
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval
  • Current IV Certification in the state of practice/Colorado state
Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year of related experience
Physical Requirements

This role requires ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy is required. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).

May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment.
