About This Position
The successful applicant will collaborate with senior staff members in a team-oriented environment to support our municipal clients in managing their environmental programs. This role presents a unique opportunity to integrate accounting responsibilities with analytical tasks in the realm of refuse, water, and wastewater management consulting.
Our current hybrid work model requires a minimum of two days in our office, with flexibility subject to the company's discretion.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of senior staff, the Accounting Specialist will undertake various tasks, including:
- General accounting functions: logging, entering, and posting cash receipts; fixed asset management; assisting in the preparation of management reports.
- Project accounting (utilizing Deltek Vision): opening and closing projects, maintaining project contract budgets, reviewing contract transactions, and assisting with billing.
- Processing expense reports, including reviewing and correcting general ledger entries, cost allocations, and project attributions.
- Payroll administration: managing semi-monthly payroll for both exempt and non-exempt staff, journal entries, and employee deductions.
- Benefits administration: handling new employee onboarding, changes, and payroll modifications, along with accounts payable and cost allocations.
- Assisting with the organization of 1099s and other year-end requirements.
- Utilizing MS Excel for various financial tasks and reporting.
- Contributing to proposal preparation and assisting in the creation of written reports and client presentations.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:
- A Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Accounting, Business Management, or a related field. Relevant professional experience may substitute for educational requirements on a case-by-case basis.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a professional services office environment.
- Demonstrated exceptional client service skills.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly regarding consistency.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with intermediate to advanced Excel capabilities.
- A balance of inquisitiveness and a sense of significance.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities and competing schedules effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
Highly desirable attributes include:
- Previous experience in billing and contracts with local government agencies or municipalities.
- Familiarity with Deltek Vision or Vantagepoint.
What We Offer
HF&H provides a competitive compensation package while emphasizing work/life balance for our employees. This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Key highlights include:
- Salary range for Accounting Specialist: $68,000 - $86,000
- Discretionary Performance-Based Incentive Bonus: up to 20% of Annual Salary
- Profit Sharing: Minimum 3% contribution to a 401(k) profit-sharing plan; recent contributions have been 5%
- 15 Vacation days per year (increasing with tenure, up to 25 days per year)
- 10 Holidays per year (including one floating holiday)
- 5 Sick days per year
- At least two off-site staff retreats and social events annually
- Health Insurance: HF&H covers 95% of employee premiums and 67.5% of dependent premiums
