PROGRAM SUMMARY:

The Family Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting parents and caregivers by providing essential resources and support to foster a successful home environment. The Family Support Specialist ensures that the perspectives and choices of parents are honored and integrated throughout the treatment process. This role empowers parents and caregivers to attain self-sufficiency and independence while offering guidance and support in executing interventions and activities.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The School Aged Treatment Program (SATS) is tailored to assist children and adolescents facing mental health challenges that hinder their academic success or disrupt their family, school, or community interactions. SATS caters to youth aged 0-21, with referrals typically originating from educational institutions, social services, and self-referrals. Services encompass therapy, case management, rehabilitation, group sessions, and are delivered in various settings, including homes, schools, and community spaces, as well as through telehealth.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess and address the needs of parents, providing relevant interventions, resources, and support.
  • Act as an advocate and support for parents during collaborative team meetings.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to family culture, values, and beliefs, employing a family-centered, strength-based approach.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation in compliance with program and contractual standards.
  • Collaborate with the client's multidisciplinary team, including county representatives and educational institutions, to develop and implement treatment plans. Attend all required meetings.
  • Leverage knowledge of community resources to effectively support children and their families.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Possess crisis management skills and the ability to apply them as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Able to establish and maintain appropriate rapport with parents and caregivers.
  • Familiarity with parenting strategies, child development, and the Child Welfare system.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Experience with the recovery process from mental illness or substance use disorder is essential.
  3. Personal experience as a parent of a child with emotional or behavioral challenges, preferably through the County's Child Welfare Services, Probation, or Mental Health System, or experience with special needs youth is preferred.

Licensure, Registration, Certification:

  1. Valid driver's license and proof of automobile insurance.
  2. Completion of CPR/First Aid/ProACT certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to drive a vehicle without restrictions, often in heavy traffic and for extended distances to ensure safe transport to client locations and appointments.
  • Vision, hearing, and smell sufficient to operate a vehicle safely and to identify potential risks in the environment.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of 10-20 pounds.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, climb stairs, and walk during family visits.
  • Frequent use of a computer in office settings.
