Position Details

Placer County is currently seeking applications for the positions of Crime Analyst - I and Crime Analyst - II. Each level in this series has distinct minimum qualifications. To be considered for recruitment at either level, separate applications and supplemental questionnaires must be submitted.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's office each have one opening for a Crime Analyst - I/II to assist in investigations. The ideal candidates will excel in data collection, analysis, and communication, with a keen attention to detail. This role requires collaboration with various staff levels and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively. Furthermore, the ideal candidate will possess a solution-oriented mindset and the agility to make quick decisions that support public safety initiatives.

Job Definition

The role involves analyzing crime and intelligence data, conducting research, monitoring and identifying trends or patterns in criminal activities within the County, and disseminating findings to management. Responsibilities also include developing and maintaining intelligence databases and performing complex data mining and analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible crime analysis experience, performing duties akin to those of a Crime Analyst I with Placer County.

Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with major coursework in criminal justice, crime analysis, law enforcement/public safety, public administration, intelligence studies, homeland security, statistics and research methodology, computer science, geographic information systems, or a related field.

Required Certification: Possession of a Crime and Intelligence Analysis certification or an equivalent recognized certification. A valid driver's license may be necessary, along with proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Familiarity with the principles and practices of crime and intelligence analysis, including the collection, validation, analysis, and dissemination of crime data; predicting and forecasting future criminal activities; developing profiles of target criminals; and documenting associations and relationships among individuals, organizations, and events.

Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems and mapping software applications, as well as charting and graphics systems and software.

Understanding of state and federal privacy and civil liberty statutes relevant to criminal justice operations.

Abilities:

Capability to develop and test hypotheses and forecasts concerning criminal activities; apply conventional and computer-based modeling, logic, structured analytic techniques, hypothesis testing algorithms, and statistical analyses.

Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, and codes; observe and resolve operational and technical policies and procedures.

Proficiency in recommending and implementing policies, guidelines, and procedures.

Skill in developing and maintaining computer database systems; retrieving raw data from multiple sources (data mining); writing and reading code and parsing data connections; and maintaining proficiency in using complex internet/web-based applications.

Selection Process

The selection will be based on a Training & Experience Rating (100%), evaluating responses to the supplemental questionnaire, education, training, and experience using a predetermined formula.
