Technical Program Manager V

Location: Redmond, WA

Duration: 6 Months

Pay Range: $100.00-$105.00 on w2

Role Mandate: As a Technical Program Manager, you will be responsible for providing successful definition, implementation, and delivery of complex programs that require cross-functional collaboration and interdependencies across a group of projects and/or related activities.

We are seeking a TPM who will work with a world-class group of researchers and engineers. This position requires a degree in optics/display, optical/electrical engineering, systems HW engineering, physics, or similar. Successful candidates must be familiar with display systems or novel optical materials hardware and software and relatively versed in VR or AR display technology trends. We're looking for a candidate who is resilient in pursuing solutions to hard and complex problems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with research, engineering, and business teams to define roadmaps, program milestones, and deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain an overall program schedule based on feedback from multiple work streams such as requirements, technical challenges, available resources, and business needs.
  • Partner with technical leads to establish program strategy, prioritization, and to deliver against OKRs.
  • Identify resources needed and work closely with the team leads to maintain full visibility of multiple projects, ensuring resource gaps are addressed efficiently.
  • Proactively identify technical, legal, procedural, logistical, and communication issues and drive creative solutions to fix them and manage both technical and programmatic risks.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop best practices and research development processes in a quickly changing and dynamic environment.
  • Engage with cross-functional and external teams to identify constraints, dependencies, and risks/issues, and to recommend action plans to address them.
  • Develop and coordinate communication between internal and external teams and partners.
  • Report program status, issues, challenges, and help needed with all stakeholders.

Performance Measurement:

Performance will be measured based on meeting consistent requirements, monthly updates, progress updates, delivering meeting notes after third-party meetings, ability to collaborate, and feedback from the team to ensure healthy relationships and ensure there are no blockers.

Must-Have Skills:

  • Experience and knowledge of display and/or optics development including manufacturing processes (e.g., cell phones, watches, lasers, etc.).
  • Experience with driving programs in a research environment.
  • Project management, leadership, dependency management, and cross-group technical collaboration experience.
  • Experience managing external technical engagements with industry and academia.
  • Organizational experience, including managing cross-team budgets and headcount.
  • Systems architecture application experience in technical domains.
  • Cross-functional peer communications – leveraging partnerships and enabling 3rd party ecosystem.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Novel material synthesis or discovery.
  • Scaled operations and manufacturing experience – make things in the lab and scaling them.
  • Program Manager side – budget planning and budget cycles.
  • Experience with AR / VR – cell phone display, smart watch display, or materials used in consumer electronics.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills – ability to provide executive updates and communications with lots of third parties.
  • Champion resource allocation.
  • Advocating for support.
  • Ability to hit the ground running.
  • Active listener.
  • Strong collaboration skills.
  • Ability to brainstorm solutions and ideas.

Educational Requirements:


• Bachelor's degree in Display, Systems Engineering, Imaging Science, Electronics, Optics, or Physics (pre-requisite) and 7+ years of experience as a Technical Program Manager.


• PMP or PMI certification beneficial.
