Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor or Site Manager, the Float Medical Assistant at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian undertakes a range of clinical and administrative responsibilities to facilitate patient care, ensuring smooth patient flow and effective communication within the healthcare team and with external medical offices.

The Float Medical Assistant embodies a professional demeanor that aligns with the mission, vision, and values of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Engages in ongoing quality improvement initiatives and maintains familiarity with departmental protocols, including the operation of specialized equipment, quality control standards, and preventive maintenance practices.

Key Responsibilities


• Welcomes and assists multiple patients, ensuring timely service:

  • Utilizes a positive and professional tone when interacting with patients and customers, both in person and over the phone.
  • Manages phone calls, schedules appointments, and fulfills front-office duties as required.


• Under the direction of the Site Supervisor or Site Manager, the Float Medical Assistant will:

  • Guide patients to examination rooms.
  • Support the RN by gathering, recording, and reporting patient-specific data such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate.
  • Collect and manage laboratory specimens in accordance with established protocols.
  • Clarify instructions to ensure patient care is executed without delay or misunderstanding.
  • Promptly communicate any unusual observations or changes in patient condition or behavior.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and procedures, executing orders as instructed.
  • Ensure that patient care is provided in compliance with professional regulatory standards.


• Manage patient flow to guarantee timely care delivery.


• Complete unit tasks such as sanitizing examination areas, cleaning equipment, disposing of waste, and running errands.


• Replenish supplies in treatment rooms, maintaining appropriate inventory levels and notifying staff when orders are necessary.


• Prioritize tasks effectively and complete all assignments promptly.


• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to provide care appropriate to the patient population as outlined in the job description and competencies.


• The position may require local travel between various organizational locations. (Mileage compensation will be provided)


• Participation in meetings outside of standard business hours may be required. Working evenings, weekends, and holidays will be necessary based on business needs (Compensation will be awarded per hours worked according to wage and hour laws).


• Perform additional duties as assigned.

MA Float

The MA Float fulfills all responsibilities of a Medical Assistant as detailed above. Additionally, the MA Float will travel between HMG locations based on operational needs and must be adaptable to schedule changes.

Education, Training, and Experience

Required:

Medical Assistant


• High school diploma or equivalent


• Completion of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent professional experience


• At least one (1) year of prior medical back-office experience, preferably in an acute healthcare setting

Preferred:


• Associate or Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field

Skills and Qualifications

Required:


• Exceptional communication skills; customer-focused; strong attention to detail; ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; excellent interpersonal skills; capable of working collaboratively in a team environment.


• Basic typing skills at 35 WPM.


• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.


• Proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of customers (physicians, organizational staff, insurance representatives, patients, and family members).


• Basic understanding of medical terminology.

Preferred:


• Bilingual or multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Licenses and Certifications

Required:


• BLS certification

Preferred:


• Certified Medical Assistant or a valid current Limited Phlebotomy Certification.
