Job Summary
The Classroom Support Specialist plays a vital role in assisting educators with various responsibilities associated with classroom operations and student oversight. Job Requirements
The following qualifications are essential:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must fulfill paraprofessional criteria for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from an accredited institution, OR a passing score on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR successful completion of the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR completion of the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
- Strong communication and customer service abilities.
- Capacity to uphold confidentiality and foster trust and collaboration among staff, parents, students, administrators, and the community.
- Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the community.
- Knowledge of first aid.
- Experience in typing and general administrative tasks.
- Ability to engage with individuals of all age groups.
- Ability to effectively communicate policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Prepares instructional materials as directed by the educator.
- Assists in setting up class projects following the educator's guidelines.
- Handles routine documentation necessary for informational purposes.
- Records academic performance as assigned by the educator.
- Monitors attendance for designated classes and supports student discipline as needed.
- Assists students in completing routine practice tasks assigned by the educator, including listening to students read.
- Helps in organizing and displaying educational materials.
- Supervises students on school grounds.
- Oversees students during lunch and recess periods, both indoors and outdoors.
- Checks objective assessments and marks errors, without determining final grades.
- Maintains student and educator records.
- Types various documents including letters, reports, and educational materials.
- Supports the mission of valuing diversity, promoting respect, and maintaining confidentiality.
The physical requirements of this position involve frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and listening. Specific visual capabilities are also necessary. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to comprehend vague and implicit instructions, recall facts and details, manage conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must effectively handle the stress of working with diverse students, parents, and colleagues in a dynamic environment.
Work Environment
The work setting is professional, involving interaction with a diverse range of individuals with varying functions, personalities, and abilities. The employee may frequently be exposed to video displays and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
