Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Commercial Lines Underwriter is responsible for assessing and analyzing applications for property insurance to determine their acceptability and pricing. This role utilizes various underwriting tools and resources while adhering to corporate underwriting policies and standards. The Underwriter also plays a crucial role in managing relationships with agents, ensuring the maintenance and servicing of the commercial book of business. Responsibilities include reviewing and approving policy modifications, handling cancellation and reinstatement requests, and conducting renewal assessments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Exemplify ethical conduct and perform job duties in alignment with the core values and ethical standards of Citizens.
  • Evaluate and underwrite applications, renewals, and cancellations for Property and Casualty insurance to assess risk acceptability, pricing, and coverage in accordance with underwriting authority and corporate guidelines.
  • Engage with agents and other stakeholders to gather necessary information for underwriting decisions and provide technical guidance regarding company policies and procedures.
  • Make informed decisions regarding the issuance, cancellation, non-renewal, or modification of policies or coverages in compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Contribute to special projects and assume additional responsibilities as required.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Fundamental technical knowledge related to Commercial Underwriting.
  • Comprehensive understanding of insurance coverages, policies, and operational procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other web-based applications.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Skill in organizing and analyzing information into various reports and formats.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associate/Technical Degree or 2 years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to 2 years.
  • 2 or more years of experience in commercial property insurance underwriting operations or related fields, with 2 years of experience potentially substituted by a Bachelor's degree in Risk Management or a business-related discipline.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of an IIA Certificate in General Insurance or an equivalent insurance designation.
  • CPCU designation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position involves frequent stationary tasks, communication, and information exchange. Occasional travel may be required.
