JOB OVERVIEW

POSITION TITLE:
Automotive Maintenance Specialist II

REPORTS TO: Fleet Maintenance Supervisor

SUPERVISES: N/A

POSITION OBJECTIVE: This role is crucial for executing skilled mechanical tasks in the upkeep and repair of vehicles and heavy machinery.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conducts both minor and extensive repairs and installations on all municipal vehicles and machinery, encompassing gasoline and diesel engines.
2. Handles specialized equipment including marina dredges, heavy tractors, loaders, and backhoes.
3. Performs repairs on all city-owned small engine tools such as riding mowers, string trimmers, and chainsaws.
4. Executes preventive maintenance on all city vehicles and machinery, which includes oil changes, tune-ups, and necessary adjustments.
5. Maintains detailed work orders for each task, documenting mileage, labor hours, performed work, and parts utilized.
6. Utilizes advanced diagnostic tools such as A/C charging stations, Ford PDA scan tools, GM Tech II systems, and International Truck ProLink Systems.
7. Conducts visual inspections to evaluate the condition of city vehicles and equipment.
8. Engages in welding and fabrication for the repair or enhancement of parts and machinery.
9. Operates and tests equipment to identify defects and verify repair quality; employs various testing instruments; tunes engines.
10. Keeps shop work orders and maintenance logs up to date.
11. Must be available for on-call duties as required.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

Performs other responsibilities as assigned or as circumstances require.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

- Expertise in diagnosing and repairing modern computer-controlled engines and associated emission systems.
- Proficient in diagnosing and repairing automotive suspension and braking systems.
- Knowledgeable in the theory, diagnosis, and repair of hydraulic systems.
- Familiar with the theory, diagnosis, and repair of mobile HVAC systems.
- Skilled in the theory, diagnosis, and repair of 12- and 24-volt electrical systems.
- Understanding of standard practices and tools in the automotive mechanic profession, with the ability to apply these methods effectively.
- Awareness of occupational hazards and safety protocols relevant to the trade.
- Competent in utilizing computers for information retrieval and understanding electronic manuals.
- Capable of identifying and rectifying defects in all machinery and vehicles.
- Ability to compile a list of necessary parts for repairs.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently and make informed decisions.
- Proficient in following both verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to source repair information from manuals, computers, and online resources.
- Capacity to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain ASE Certification in Automotive Electrical, Automotive Brakes, Automotive Engine Repair, and Automotive Engine Performance.
- Must obtain National Safety Council Forklift Training Certification within six months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
- Must acquire EPA Refrigerant Certification Section 609 within six months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
- Must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License and retain it throughout employment.
- Must possess the necessary tools for automotive repair at the time of hire.
- Minimum of two years of experience in automotive repair required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

An incumbent must be able to frequently push, pull, lift, and/or carry items weighing up to 50 lbs., and occasionally up to 75 lbs. Must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate vehicles, computers, tools, and other equipment essential for job functions. Work hours may occasionally extend into nighttime. The noise level is typically moderate. Vision capabilities must include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities must include the capacity to talk and hear within normal ranges. Interaction with the public and coworkers is required, which may be stressful when addressing complaints or time constraints.
