Job Title: Animal Care Technician II CMU

The Children's National Research Institute Comparative Medicine Unit (CMU) Animal Care Technician II provides critical support to the research community by ensuring the health and well-being of laboratory animals. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Observe animals daily for signs of health and take prompt action to address any issues.
  • Administer medication and treatment as prescribed by the Veterinarian.
  • Provide adequate food and water for all assigned cages.
  • Maintain daily and weekly sanitation of cages, assigned rooms, and common areas.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with cage wash duties as assigned.
  • Minimize cross-contamination per SOPs.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • 2 years High school graduate or equivalent with at least two years experience in laboratory animal care required.
  • AALAS certification at ALAT level (Required)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Documented evidence of specialized experience demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position.
  • Ability to perform within a team-oriented work environment.
  • Basic computer skills required, including familiarity with navigating web-based applications.
Working Conditions:

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. The physical demands of this position require an individual with dexterity for handling animals, the ability to lift 50lbs, and the capability to stand for the majority of the work shift.

The workplace is a research facility; there is the potential for exposure to chemicals used to sanitize, zoonotic diseases, and the possibility of being bitten, scratched or kicked. Allergic responses may develop to animal dander.

This position is designated as essential and the individual may be expected to work when normal campus operations are suspended (e.g.: inclement weather) or if there is an emergency impacting the CMU.
