Position Title: Forensic Biology Examiner at the Commonwealth of Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled individual to perform forensic biology assessments at its designated laboratory. This position entails the identification and analysis of biological samples, including blood and other bodily fluids, conducting DNA profiling, and comparing genetic evidence related to criminal investigations using state-of-the-art techniques and equipment. The examiner will utilize national databases for data management, compile comprehensive reports, and serve as an expert witness in legal proceedings. Furthermore, the role involves collaboration with medical and legal professionals, advising law enforcement on evidence protocols, and may require occasional travel.

Essential Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science, or a closely related discipline
  • Completion of a minimum of nine semester hours in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, statistics, and population genetics
  • At least six months of experience in forensic human DNA laboratories
  • Successful completion of a forensic DNA training program from an accredited institution
  • Experience as a certified DNA analyst in a forensic environment
  • Expertise in identifying bodily fluids, laboratory safety protocols, and quality assurance/quality control measures
  • Capability to provide expert testimony in court, interpret scientific data, manage multiple tasks effectively, and prioritize responsibilities
  • A valid driver's license for potential travel requirements

Additional Considerations

  • Experience as an expert witness and knowledge of accreditation standards
  • Familiarity with CODIS software, forensic training experience, and Y-STR analysis
  • Knowledge of probabilistic genotyping software and certification from a recognized authority

Trainee Information:
If a candidate for the Forensic Scientist position does not fulfill all essential qualifications, they may be considered for a Trainee role. The Trainee will receive training and develop skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective time management.

Trainee Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • Ability to analyze data, manage tasks efficiently, and communicate effectively
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, along with a valid driver's license
Trainee Additional Considerations:
  • Practical experience in a forensic DNA laboratory
  • Experience with STR analysis on forensic samples
