Position Title: Forensic Biology Specialist at Commonwealth of Virginia
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled individual to perform forensic biology assessments at its forensic laboratory. This position entails the identification and analysis of biological samples, including blood and other bodily fluids, as well as conducting DNA profiling and comparing genetic evidence related to criminal investigations using state-of-the-art techniques and equipment. The specialist will be responsible for data entry into the national database, preparing comprehensive reports, and serving as an expert witness in legal proceedings. Additionally, the role requires collaboration with medical and legal professionals, offering guidance to law enforcement regarding evidence management, and may involve occasional travel.
Essential Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science, or a closely related discipline
- Completion of at least nine semester hours in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, statistics, and population genetics
- A minimum of six months of experience in forensic DNA laboratories
- Successful completion of a forensic DNA training program from an accredited institution
- Experience as a certified DNA analyst in a forensic setting
- Expertise in body fluid identification, laboratory safety protocols, and quality assurance/control procedures
- Ability to provide expert testimony in court, interpret scientific data, manage multiple tasks effectively, and prioritize responsibilities
- A valid driver's license for potential travel requirements
Additional Considerations
- Experience as an expert witness and knowledge of accreditation standards
- Familiarity with CODIS software, experience in forensic training, and Y-STR analysis
- Understanding of probabilistic genotyping software and certification from a recognized authority
Trainee Position:
In cases where a candidate for the Forensic Scientist role does not meet all required qualifications, a Trainee position may be offered. The Trainee will receive training and develop essential skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective time management.
Trainee Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
- Capability to analyze data, manage tasks efficiently, and communicate effectively
- Strong oral and written communication skills, along with a valid driver's license
- Practical experience in a forensic DNA laboratory
- Experience with STR analysis on forensic samples
