This position is located at the State of North Carolina Crime Laboratory in Raleigh, N.C. and provides support to 2 units of the Lab, Forensic Biology and DNA Database sections.

THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO THE RECRUITMENT RANGE OF $36,682 to $50,438. Salary offers are based upon the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as departmental budget and equity considerations.

The primary purpose of the Forensic Biology Section is to provide the North Carolina Criminal Justice System with trained and experienced forensic scientists who analyze evidence seized in the course of criminal investigations. The forensic services provided include laboratory analysis and expert witness testimony in the areas of serology and DNA analysis.

The primary purpose of the DNA Database Section, pursuant to Article 13 of Chapter 15A of the NC State General Statutes, is to receive and analyze both blood and cheek cell samples from arrestees and convicted felons to produce a DNA profile to be maintained in a State and National DNA Database. These databases will be used to assist federal, state, and local criminal justice and law enforcement agencies in the identification, detection, and exclusion of individuals who are subjects of criminal investigation.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide secretarial support for the administrative operation of the Forensic Biology and DNA Database Sections. This position performs a variety of generalist office assistant tasks in support of administrative, program or technical operations, that include a diversity of records, reports and filing activities, public contact, office equipment operation, composition, and other general office duties.

Selected candidate will undergo and must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation which may take several months to complete. The background investigation includes: credit and arrest checks; interviews with associates, personal and business references, past employers and neighbors; verification of education achievement, and urinalysis drug screening.

Out of state applicants: This may require the applicant to return to the State of North Carolina multiple times at his or her own expense after the initial interview, in order to undergo the background investigation process.An in-basket skills test will be administered at the interview.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management preferences: Management prefers experience in providing administrative support with a high level of independence, advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Sharepoint experience, knowledge and experience utilizing the NC State Crime Lab policy and procedures, knowledge and experience with the NC procurement process, and excellent communication skills with both internal and external customers.
