Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a qualified individual to perform critical postmortem examinations and medicolegal autopsies for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). This role involves documenting findings, providing expert consultation to legal officials, and testifying in court as needed. Additionally, the position may include directing the operations of an OCME District Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough postmortem examinations and medicolegal autopsies.
  • Document results and findings accurately.
  • Provide expert consultation and information to court officials involved in death investigations.
  • Testify in court regarding findings and methodologies.
  • Assist in the education and training of death investigators and health professionals.
  • May oversee staff and activities within an OCME District Office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school with postgraduate training in anatomic and forensic pathology.
  • Certification as a forensic pathology specialist by the American Board of Pathology.
  • Licensure to practice medicine in Virginia.
  • Completion of an approved forensic pathology training program with at least one year of forensic experience.
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication in English.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other professionals and community officials.
  • Strong teaching and supervisory communication skills.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in medicolegal death investigations is preferred.
  • Prior experience testifying in court is advantageous.
  • Advanced training in specialized areas such as cardiovascular pathology, neuropathology, or public health is desirable.
  • University appointment may be available, with rank based on qualifications.
