Accountability Objective
The Academic Advisor plays a crucial role in guiding students to identify suitable educational and career aspirations that align with their interests and strengths. This role involves exploring various pathways to help students achieve their objectives.
A key responsibility of the Advisor is to assist students in selecting their academic programs, choosing relevant courses, and planning educational activities that facilitate their progression towards their goals.
The Advisor will also provide support to students facing mental health challenges, offering resources and referrals to additional services available on and off campus.
Required Qualifications
Master's Degree in Counseling or a related discipline; strong communication skills to engage effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds; experience in personal counseling; excellent verbal and written communication abilities; proficiency in using computers and educational/vocational online resources.
Desired Qualifications
Master's Degree in Counseling with a focus on school counseling; at least two years of experience in counseling or academic advising; comprehensive knowledge of college counseling, articulation, career planning, and student services; experience attending community college.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Academic and Career Counseling
Provide comprehensive academic and career guidance to a diverse community college student body.
2. Educational Planning
Assist students in defining their educational and career objectives, guiding them through the exploration process as necessary. Develop tailored educational plans for students using Student Planner to ensure a clear pathway towards certificate or degree completion.
3. Assessment Interpretation
Interpret various placement, achievement, and entrance examinations.
4. Class Registration
Facilitate student registration for appropriate courses based on their academic goals, major, and transfer aspirations.
5. Academic Regulations Education
Inform students about academic policies, degree requirements, and available college resources.
6. Degree Audits
Conduct degree audits, identifying options for students to meet specific degree requirements and making timely recommendations for waivers or substitutions.
7. Student Records Management
Maintain accurate student files and records, documenting all relevant student information and updating student information systems.
8. Transfer Curriculum Guides
Compile and maintain transfer curriculum guides and other advisement materials as needed.
9. Collaboration with Schools
Establish working relationships with staff from transfer institutions and local high school counselors.
10. Information Dissemination
Share information about the college's curricula during orientation sessions, recruitment events, and career days, promoting various programs and certificates.
11. Advising Materials Preparation
Create advising materials to support student recruitment and retention efforts.
12. Policy Development Assistance
Contribute to the review and formulation of policies and practices aimed at enhancing student retention and success.
13. Student Learning Assessment
Assist in evaluating student learning outcomes and departmental effectiveness.
14. Confidentiality Compliance
Understand and adhere to all confidentiality and information security policies.
15. Advisory Board Participation
Serve on various career program advisory boards as required.
16. Resource Liaison
Act as a liaison for information between the college's instructional staff and service divisions.
17. Student Engagement Enhancement
Enhance the Advisor/Advisee relationship by increasing student interactions and providing timely workshops and services across various platforms.
18. Targeted Advisement
Provide personalized advisement and interventions to specific student populations to improve retention and success rates.
19. Crisis Management
Be available to assist students in crisis and refer them to appropriate mental health services as needed.
20. Professional Development
Stay updated on the latest counseling techniques through ongoing education and collaboration with local mental health providers.
21. Documentation and Reporting
Document student issues and report significant concerns to appropriate college officials.
22. Additional Responsibilities
Perform other duties as assigned to support the college's mission and objectives.
