Position Overview

This role is pivotal in overseeing the direction, coordination, and comprehensive management of lateral associate and law student recruitment. Responsibilities encompass the recruitment and integration of lateral attorneys, management of campus recruitment initiatives, summer associate programs, and new associate onboarding for Reed Smith's offices. Additionally, this position entails managing attorney integration, mentorship programs, and various related talent management functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with the Director of Recruiting, Department Heads, Practice Leaders, and Office Managing Partners to identify and attract lateral candidates.
  • Works alongside sponsoring partners and local administrative teams to facilitate a smooth recruiting and onboarding experience for lateral candidates, ensuring alignment with the Firm's standards of excellence.
  • Partners with attorneys and Business Development to ensure effective integration and business development for each lateral hire.
  • Develops and analyzes reports and forecasts regarding market trends in diversity, legal recruitment, and retention.
  • Conducts preliminary screenings of all lateral attorney and law student applications, ensuring proper correspondence and record maintenance.
  • Maintains regular communication with candidates regarding the Firm's recruitment procedures and policies.
  • Manages the formal due diligence and offer process for lateral hires.
  • Acts as the liaison with external organizations involved in the legal recruitment process, including legal search firms and professional associations.
  • Prepares and analyzes reports and statistics related to market hiring and attorney personnel issues for Firm management.
  • Actively participates in Recruiting and Summer Associate Committees.
  • Prepares and oversees the legal recruiting annual budget.
  • Designs and implements all aspects of the summer program, including the interview process, pre-employment communications, orientation, training, work assignments, educational and social events, and evaluation processes.
  • Manages the Summer Associate mentoring program.
  • Maintains summer associate documentation, work assignments, and evaluation processes, ensuring timely feedback from assigning attorneys.
  • Provides guidance and support to Summer Associates throughout their tenure regarding Firm policies and procedures.
  • Plans and coordinates law school recruitment activities, including receptions and targeted communications.
  • Collaborates with the firmwide recruiting team on pre-employment correspondence for entry-level associates, new hire start dates, and related expenses.
  • Communicates new hire information to relevant Firm personnel.
  • Advises new associates on the bar application process and manages reimbursement for bar application fees.
  • Coordinates the new associate mentoring program.
  • Prepares and manages the new associate program annual budget.
  • Works with the Legal Recruiting Team across various Reed Smith markets to synchronize recruiting efforts and Summer/New Associate programs.
  • Participates in HR, Recruiting, and Summer Committee meetings, as well as Firmwide attorney meetings.
  • Maintains familiarity with Firm systems, policies, and procedures to effectively address questions and concerns.
  • The Manager is expected to maintain memberships in relevant professional organizations.
  • Initiates process improvement ideas and engages in projects aimed at enhancing internal procedures.
  • Performs additional projects and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor's degree is strongly preferred.

Experience: A minimum of four years of management-level recruiting experience in a law firm, along with prior supervisory experience, is strongly preferred. A solid understanding of current law firm industry trends and philosophies is essential.

Skills: Strong leadership, management, and organizational abilities are required. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, along with good judgment and a professional demeanor, are essential for making a positive first impression of the Firm. The ability to work effectively with all levels of Firm personnel and establish productive working relationships is crucial. Candidates should be highly motivated, creative, flexible, results-oriented, and capable of prioritizing tasks effectively.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises the Legal Recruiting Coordinator/Specialist and any recruiting administrative support staff, in conjunction with the Director of Legal Recruiting.

Equipment Utilization: Personal computer and standard office equipment.
