Position Overview
As a Plasma Collection Specialist, you will play a crucial role in the safe and effective collection of plasma from donors. This position involves performing venipuncture, overseeing the pheresis process, and adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Key Responsibilities
1. Execute all phases of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection in accordance with SOPs, including donor preparation, monitoring, and disconnection.
2. Conduct venipuncture on donors to initiate the pheresis process, ensuring compliance with SOPs and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulations.
3. Assess the donor's vein performance to identify potential issues, making necessary adjustments to optimize donation time and ensure the quality of the product and safety of the donor.
4. Provide education to new donors regarding therapeutic products derived from donated plasma, explaining the screening process, health tests, appointment scheduling, donation fees, center policies, nutrition, and other relevant information. Address all donor inquiries promptly and professionally.
5. Remain vigilant to any donor reactions, providing assistance or notifying appropriate personnel as needed.
6. Utilize a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to document incidents during the pheresis process, including machine alerts, volume variances, and donor adverse events.
7. Perform necessary calibrations and verify maintenance as outlined in SOPs, responding to and resolving complex equipment alarms or donor-related issues.
8. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, create incident reports, and manage equipment service status.
9. Monitor donor flow on the collection floor to ensure continuous turnover, alerting supervisors to any issues.
10. Collect arm or whole blood samples from donors for testing purposes.
11. Accurately record donor information in the electronic donor management system as per SOPs.
12. Understand the policies related to hyper immune programs at the center, if applicable.
13. Maintain a clean and efficient workspace, ensuring that necessary supplies and forms are readily available. Adhere to all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, promoting safety in all actions.
14. Uphold confidentiality regarding all personnel, donor, and center information.

May also be cross-trained in other areas to support business needs. Bilingual skills may be required to meet organizational demands.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of twelve (12) months of experience in a medical or healthcare setting is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Environment
  • Ability to complete routine forms and conduct oral communications.
  • Must be able to understand, remember, and apply both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to see and communicate with customers while observing equipment operations.
  • Occasional standing and walking for up to 100% of the time.
  • Physical tasks may include reaching, bending, kneeling, and require a high level of manual dexterity.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 25 pounds.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures, and bloodborne pathogens is expected.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required during specific tasks or in designated areas.
  • Willingness to work overtime and extended hours as needed to support operational requirements.
