Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Department Manager to join our team at Burns & McDonnell. This role will be responsible for supervising, training, and directing staff in the Atlanta T&D Substation Department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advocate for safety in the department
  • Recruit candidates that align with MacCulture principles, department needs, growth strategies, and business objectives
  • Manage the Atlanta Substation internship program
  • Support the early careers recruiting team to drive recruiting efforts at colleges and universities in the Southeast
  • Coordinate team and mentor assignments of department staff with substation department manager, project managers, and project engineers for efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff
  • Review employee performance and conduct development meetings (90-day and annual performance appraisals, mid-year reviews, coaching sessions, etc.)
  • Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement
  • Drive a culture of quality and continual improvement
  • Responsible for fostering a healthy, vibrant, and inclusive employee-owner culture within the team through the leverage of sound team-building practices, the promotion and administration of effective conflict resolution, the promotion of ownership mentality, a healthy work-life balance, and community engagement
  • Provide overall leadership to the team through effective communication, empowering others, and servant leadership
  • Advocate for staff by meeting regularly, listening to their short- and long-term goals, and providing guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals
  • Build strong partnerships with Kansas City and other regional office teams, including the Burns & McDonnell India team
  • Identify training needs for the department and support/develop training programs. Collaborate with other departments on shared training
  • Interpret policies, purposes, and goals of the organization to staff
  • Approve timecards and maintain billable time
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems
  • Support and lead initiatives within the Substation department
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or a related field from an ABET-accredited program
  • Minimum 5 years of related professional experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments
  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered
  • Professional Engineering licensure preferred
  • Previous leadership and/or management experience preferred
  • Previous consulting experience preferred
