Overview of the Emotional Support Specialist Role: The Emotional Support Specialist will collaborate closely with the Emotional Support Educators to deliver exceptional assistance to our students facing Emotional and Behavioral Challenges. This role requires an individual with a profound capacity to build rapport with vulnerable students, experience in calming students exhibiting anger or behavioral difficulties, and a passion for teaching.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare thoroughly for lessons, meetings, coaching sessions, and professional development opportunities.

  • Assist with student and staff recruitment and engagement activities.
  • Be prepared to travel to various KIPP campuses or events as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including lunch duty and other school support responsibilities.
Daily Activities:
  • Work flexibly across various contexts, including one-on-one, small groups, and classroom support.
  • Implement daily interventions and accommodations for students on your caseload.
  • Build strong relationships with students with IEPs and those undergoing the MTSS process.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques with students experiencing emotional distress.
  • Collaborate with the Student Services Team and Leadership Team regarding student behavior.
  • Participate in daily huddles to discuss student needs and targeted support.
  • Organize and prepare materials for absent students.
  • Review progress data and goals with students on your caseload.
  • Collect and analyze data regarding student behavior and progress towards IEP goals.
  • Support students in general education classes and intervention settings.
  • Assist teachers in preparing social-emotional lessons for students on your caseload.
  • Support teachers during student/parent conferences.
Collaboration:
  • Work with Special Education Teachers, classroom educators, and mental health staff to implement social-emotional strategies and behavior plans.
  • Contribute to weekly data collection efforts.
  • Engage in daily discussions with staff regarding student goals and support.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma (required).
  • Bachelor's degree (preferred).
  • Commitment to an Exceptional Student Experience (required).
  • Flexibility and willingness to de-escalate students (required).
  • Desire to work with youth from challenging backgrounds.
  • Experience in mentoring or caretaking roles.
  • Proficient in data management and communication using Google and Outlook platforms.
