Volunteers of America Colorado is a nonprofit organization driven by faith and a commitment to assist individuals in need to transform their lives. We operate over 50 diverse human service programs, positively impacting the lives of more than 140,000 vulnerable individuals in Colorado annually. Our services encompass housing solutions, emergency shelters, nutritional support, and various community assistance initiatives. Our mission integrates compassion with effective programming to uplift and strengthen communities.
Role Purpose
The Housing Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering essential services and housing assistance to participants in the Family Housing Program (FHP) and Housing Stabilization Program (HSP). The FHP is designed to support families during their initial year in public housing, while the HSP offers rapid rehousing solutions for families experiencing homelessness over a 12-24 month period. The role employs methodologies such as Housing First, Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, and Critical Time Intervention.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive needs assessments and engage in community outreach.
- Provide case management services and assist clients with housing navigation and retention.
- Connect clients to income resources and public benefits, and facilitate rental assistance requests.
- Recruit and mediate with landlords to secure housing for participants.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and community service providers to coordinate wrap-around services.
- Attend relevant meetings, trainings, and community events to enhance service delivery.
- Ensure that participant voices are prioritized in programming and service provision.
- Maintain accurate records and reporting in compliance with grant guidelines and data quality standards.
- Develop safety plans to support participant well-being.
- Engage in community outreach to identify households facing significant barriers to housing stability.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in human services, social work, or a related field, along with a valid driver's license and state-mandated automobile insurance. Preferred candidates will have familiarity with housing market trends and experience working with homeless populations.
Skills and Competencies
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and cloud-based applications.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
- A collaborative spirit and the ability to work independently.
Working Conditions
This position requires travel throughout the Denver Metro area, and the ability to work closely with other staff members. Flexibility in working hours, including some evenings and weekends, may be necessary.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $21.00-$23.00 per hour, with benefits including vacation time, sick leave, health insurance options, and retirement plans.
