Mental Health Counselor Job Description

Austin Community College is seeking a skilled Mental Health Counselor to provide high-quality support services to our diverse student population.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Regional Dean of Mental Health Counseling, the successful candidate will provide individual and group counseling services to students, addressing a range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, and crisis management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of students referred from various sources, including the CARES behavioral intervention teams and Title IX coordinator.
  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling sessions, as well as walk-in coverage, to students seeking assistance with personal concerns.
  • Conduct mental health assessments and screenings, utilizing evidence-based practices.
  • Exercise clinical judgment in assessing Level 1 URGENT student referrals situations and making appropriate recommendations.
  • Collaborate with ACC mental health officers, administrators, faculty, and staff to provide support in managing campus crisis situations.
  • Provide professional consultation to faculty, staff, and students related to student mental health concerns.
  • Assist in coordinating referrals to clinical and psychiatric resources, both within and outside the college.
  • Develop and implement psychoeducational workshops, training, and outreach programs to promote student mental health and well-being.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, case consultations, and staff development programs to stay current with best practices in mental health counseling.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed in the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or other relevant licensure.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation for local travel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • More than three years of clinical counseling experience in higher education.
  • Experience with prevention programming and outreach networking relevant to the college population.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will work in a standard office environment, with occasional travel to college campuses and community locations. Evenings, weekends, and extended workdays may be required.
