Associate Director of Development and Community Partnerships

The Gemini Observatory is seeking a highly skilled Associate Director of Development and Community Partnerships to oversee the transformation of the Observatory's instrumentation and adaptive optics capabilities over the next decade.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a diverse, distributed group of instrument scientists, systems engineers, project managers, and AO specialists, and will partner with NOIRLab engineering and science services to identify additional resources within NOIRLab and support broader NOIRLab long-term plans and activities.

This role requires strong communication skills and strong knowledge of project management and systems engineering best practices, as well as the ability to successfully manage technically, culturally, and geographically diverse teams.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in astronomy, physics, or engineering (PhD or equivalent) and 10+ years of experience in astronomical instrument development or a related field.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Gemini portfolio of instrumentation development projects
  • Manage the Gemini Instrument Development fund
  • Partner with NOIRLab engineering and science services to identify additional resources within NOIRLab
  • Support broader NOIRLab long-term plans and activities

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in astronomy, physics, or engineering (PhD or equivalent)
  • 10+ years of experience in astronomical instrument development or a related field
  • Strong communication skills and knowledge of project management and systems engineering best practices
  • Ability to successfully manage technically, culturally, and geographically diverse teams
