Position Overview

The Principal Accountant (Innovation) will act as a key advisor to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), providing expert opinions and analysis on intricate accounting, reporting, and Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICFR) matters. This role is pivotal in shaping and executing accounting policies and procedures relevant to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).

Key Responsibilities

The Principal Accountant (Innovation) will undertake the following duties, which are aligned with the EL-15 grade level:
  • Oversee the creation and finalization of financial reports for the agency.
  • Provide guidance to leadership on complex government accounting standards and processes.
  • Implement new or revised regulations within the agency's accounting and financial management frameworks.
  • Apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to enhance financial management and reporting.
  • Coordinate responses to both internal and external financial audits.
  • Lead the agency's actions in response to audit findings, including developing corrective measures.
  • Enhance internal control systems to mitigate potential deficiencies.
  • Compile and review accountability reports for public dissemination.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements or automation within the agency's financial systems.
  • Support the implementation of updates to the agency's financial management systems.
  • Engage in initiatives to develop low or no-code applications aimed at improving financial processes.
  • Evaluate financial systems to pinpoint areas for enhancement.
  • Recommend technological solutions to optimize budget and finance systems.
  • Explore the potential of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to refine financial practices.
  • Contribute to the rollout of innovative financial management practices.
  • Ensure the continuous improvement of agency processes related to financial management and reporting.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
