Position Overview:

This role is situated within the Retail Food Program of the Food Safety Division at GeorgiaGov.

The Retail Food Program is tasked with enforcing state laws, regulations, and guidelines by performing sanitation inspections of retail food establishments.

These establishments include grocery stores, convenience stores, bakeries, seafood operations, salvage food operations, mobile meat vendors, and rolling stores, ensuring adherence to Good Retail Practices (GRPs) and the integrity of food products.

The retail food compliance officer conducts random and unannounced inspections of licensed food sales establishments.

All retail food compliance officers are required to complete retail standardization training.

Job Summary:

Under supervision, this position involves learning to conduct inspections and investigations in food, dairy, and processing facilities to ensure compliance with established state and federal laws, regulations, and guidelines.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Inspecting and investigating retail food establishments for compliance with relevant health and sanitation laws.
  • Performing duties to ensure adherence to applicable rules and regulations.
  • Collecting food samples, water samples, and environmental swabs for laboratory analysis.
  • Transporting samples to laboratories for analysis within specified methods and timelines.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of current policies, laws, regulations, and guidance documents.
  • Participating in training sessions, meetings, and conferences.
  • Verifying the accuracy of scales and checking refrigeration equipment for proper operation.
  • Ensuring proper product packaging and labeling.
  • Observing food facility employees to ensure compliance.
  • Implementing proper cleaning procedures and handling of insecticides and sanitizing chemicals.
  • Investigating food safety following disasters such as fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, or transportation accidents.
  • Planning, organizing, and managing assigned territory, training, and program activities.
  • Reporting compliance findings through the appropriate channels.
  • Serving as a technical expert within the assigned program.
  • Building and maintaining working relationships with the food industry and related entities, including federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Preparing and completing necessary agency, state, and federal forms.
  • Performing USDA Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) contract work as directed.
  • Maintaining all state-issued equipment appropriately.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in agronomy, animal science, biology, chemistry, or a related field; or certification as a registered sanitarian or environmental health specialist.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications, possess knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Certification as a registered sanitarian or registered environmental health specialist by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA); two years of professional experience conducting inspections and investigations for compliance with established state and federal health and food sanitation laws; and/or
  • Working knowledge of Windows operating systems and applications.

Physical Demands:

Constant standing/walking, climbing stairs, exposure to water and varying temperatures, and long travel days are required.
