POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this role is responsible for guiding, training, and overseeing a team engaged in the intricate and demanding tasks related to parks upkeep, landscaping, renovation, and repair services. The supervisor will also execute various technical responsibilities pertinent to designated areas of operation.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides technical and functional oversight to junior staff members.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct, organize, and review the activities of personnel involved in parks maintenance, landscaping, renovation, and repair tasks.
  • Ensure proper usage and operation of tools and equipment utilized in parks maintenance and landscaping.
  • Assess time, materials, and equipment needed for specific tasks; order necessary supplies and ensure timely delivery.
  • Train team members in effective work methods, techniques, and equipment operation.
  • Evaluate the work of team members for accuracy and compliance with established standards; maintain a clean work environment.
  • Conduct comprehensive turf maintenance activities including watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, aerating, and fertilizing; manage flower beds and landscaped areas.
  • Perform trimming and pruning of trees and shrubs to maintain health and safety.
  • Oversee maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, including head adjustments and controller upkeep.
  • Engage in athletic turf maintenance as required.
  • Operate a variety of parks maintenance vehicles and equipment, ensuring their upkeep and preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain and repair playground equipment and other park facilities, documenting inspections and repairs.
  • Conduct pest control activities, including the application of chemicals for weed and insect management.
  • Supervise the safe mixing and application of pesticides and herbicides, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Manage debris removal following storm damage and other conditions.
  • Identify maintenance needs and potential safety hazards.
  • Clear leaves and debris from public areas; ensure cleanliness.
  • Coordinate with event management for setup and takedown of equipment for special occasions.
  • Assist in snow removal operations as needed.
  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: A minimum of four years in parks maintenance and repair, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain a commercial driver's license within one year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator's Certificate within one year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Traffic Control Flagger and Forklift Certificates within one year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain OSHA 10-Hour Safety Certification within one year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Confined Space Safety Certification within one year of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Weed control methods and safe chemical application.
  • Operations and services of a parks maintenance program.
  • Principles of effective supervision and training.
  • Safety precautions relevant to parks maintenance work.
  • Techniques and tools for constructing and maintaining parks and landscaped areas.
  • Relevant laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Plant pests and their management.
  • Watering requirements for various plants and soil types.
  • Safe driving practices.

Skills:

  • Effective application of herbicides and pesticides in compliance with regulations.
  • Safe operation of parks maintenance equipment.
  • Heavy manual labor in diverse weather conditions.
  • Proficient use of office software and asset management tools.

Ability to:

  • Assist in the hiring and management of seasonal staff.
  • Communicate effectively with community volunteers.
  • Plan and organize the work of maintenance staff.
  • Prepare clear records and reports using office software.
  • Conduct safety training and maintain training documentation.
  • Respond to public inquiries professionally.
  • Perform complex maintenance tasks independently.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Establish positive working relationships with colleagues.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 100 lbs., and working outdoors in various conditions. Exposure to noise, chemicals, and mechanical hazards is expected.
