Parks Maintenance Operator Job Description

Job Summary:

West Haven City is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Parks Maintenance Operator to join our team. As a key member of our Parks and Recreation department, you will be responsible for performing various duties related to the maintenance and upkeep of our city's parks, grounds, and facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform general building maintenance, including construction, installation, and repair of city buildings, recreation facilities, parks, and grounds.
  • Assure proper operation of lighting fixtures, doors, windows, and plumbing, and may assist in framing, painting, roofing, or other skilled construction and maintenance activities related to carpentry, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Perform concrete and masonry work, including the installation and maintenance of playground equipment.
  • Assist in the layout and installation of sprinkler systems, and install, test, and maintain systems utilizing low-voltage, hydraulic, or other operating features.
  • Identify the need to initiate various aspects of spraying programs related to the prevention or eradication of pests, fungi, and insects harmful to park plants, trees, and shrubs.
  • Operate lawn mowing equipment, perform routine repair and lubrication, and mow and trim grass, bushes, shrubs, and plants.
  • Remove dead, diseased, or injured trees, and stimulate healthy plant growth through custom pruning and cutting.
  • Operate tractors and implements, as well as water trucks, and perform arena grooming and maintenance.
  • Perform general landscape and gardening activities, including planting and transplanting trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, flowers, etc.
  • Operate a variety of types of small and light equipment, including mowers, sod cutters, chain saws, pruning equipment, backhoe, loaders, trenchers, and various hand tools.
  • Perform routine and regular maintenance on equipment to assure efficiency and safety.
  • Perform seasonal duties, including winterizing sprinkler systems to prevent freezing, flushing watering systems in spring, and repairing other equipment and facilities.
  • May train other laborers using backhoes, loader tractors, gang lawnmowers, and landscape equipment.
  • Oversee general cleanup, maintenance, and repair of restrooms, pavilions, playgrounds, picnic tables, benches, bleachers, ball fields, and other facilities.
  • Perform digging of graves and burial at City Cemetery, including marking headstones and all other cemetery-related maintenance.
  • Snow removal and weed control of all city-owned trails and sidewalks.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • One (1) year of general work experience is preferable in a field related to the above duties.
  • Must possess a valid Utah driver's license.
  • Must obtain CDL class B with tanker endorsement.
  • Pesticide/Herbicide applicator license within six months of hire.
  • OSHA Safety Certificate.

Working Conditions:

Tasks require a variety of physical activities periodically involving muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, pulling, and reaching. Essential functions require talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required to perform essential functions. Daily local travel is necessary for job performance---ongoing exposure to changing weather conditions.

Physical and Mental Demands:

Must be able to lift 20-50 pounds continually and frequently lift/carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift/carry more than 100 pounds. Crouching/kneeling, balancing, and bending/twisting may occur usually when performing essential duties.
