Waste Collection Operator

The Waste Collection Operator is tasked with the safe, efficient, and courteous delivery of waste management services to clients. This role involves the collection of solid waste or recyclables from designated locations and transporting them to appropriate post-collection facilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Operates a rear-load, split body, curotto, or automated-side load vehicle along specified routes to gather waste and deliver it to post-collection sites.

- Assists crew members in loading solid waste into the vehicle as route conditions necessitate.

- Utilizes crew members while reversing the vehicle in accordance with company protocols.

- Ensures compliance with company policies, procedures, safety regulations, and quality standards among all personnel on the designated route.

- Operates mechanical equipment to load and compact refuse from the hopper into the vehicle body.

- Conducts daily pre- and post-trip inspections; completes and submits the vehicle condition report at the end of each shift.

- Engages courteously with customers and the public along the route to address inquiries or respond to requests; informs supervisors of any issues requiring management intervention.

- Cleans waste from the packer blade and vehicle body after each landfill and/or transfer station visit to ensure safe and productive equipment operation.

- Maintains and submits a DOT logbook, daily route/productivity sheet, and vehicle condition report as mandated by law or company policy.

- Maneuvers the vehicle in and out of tight spaces, utilizing mirrors for safe reversing.

- Uses maps and GPS technology to locate service addresses.

- Adheres to safe operating practices, including lockout/tagout procedures to ensure proper vehicle operation.

- Monitors operations to identify loose debris, using mirrors or direct observation and/or listening for debris falling during dumping operations; visually inspects customer sites before and after dumping.

- Complies with all DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, and EPA regulations and standards.

- Performs additional job-related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.

- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B required.

- Minimum age of 21 years.

- At least one (1) year of commercial driving experience or a CDL school certificate.

- Must meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions as per company standards.

- Demonstrated ability to safely operate the vehicle and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Understanding of the vehicle and its components, along with basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.

- Ability to control equipment operations; maneuver the vehicle in and out of tight spaces, using mirrors to reverse distances of approximately 120 feet or more.

- Ability to identify unacceptable waste (e.g., flammable materials).

- Effective communication skills with both internal and external customers.

- Proficient in reading, writing, and comprehending related documents and maps.

- Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.

- Flexibility to adapt to changes and a commitment to continuous improvement.

- Physical capability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper techniques.

- Ability to coordinate multiple limbs while sitting or standing.

- Commitment to following all company safety policies and procedures.

Physical and Mental Demands:

- Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.

- Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus due to constant vehicle maneuvering in tight and high-traffic areas.

- Regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.

- Sitting may be required for up to 75% of the time due to the primary function of driving.

- Ability to work in typically loud environments.

Working Conditions:

- Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rainy/stormy conditions, and extreme temperatures (depending on the season).

- Work is conducted outdoors up to 100% of the time.

- Operates away from the branch location continuously throughout the day.

- Occasionally works in high or precarious places.

- Constantly works in motor vehicle traffic conditions.

- Work environment is generally loud.
