The roles of the financial analyst/accounting specialist offer flexible work arrangements, including remote, hybrid, and/or on-campus office options. Employees are expected to participate in several in-person events annually, with travel costs being the responsibility of the employee.
Salary Range (annual):
The anticipated salary range for the Financial Analyst 2 is $65,000 - $75,000, while the range for the Lead Financial Analyst 3 is $73,000 - $83,000. Final salary offers will depend on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.

The following responsibilities apply to both the Financial Analyst 2 and Lead Financial Analyst 3 positions, with assignments generally determined by portfolio size, scope, and complexity.
Accounting, Budgeting, Financial Oversight, and Grant Management:
Maintain the assigned unit's chart of accounts in compliance with University and College policies.
Authorize financial transactions; ensure accuracy and adherence to established policies and procedures.
Reconcile financial activities across all funding sources to guarantee appropriate fund usage and revenue/expense allocation; initiate and process journal entry corrections.
Ensure accurate and compliant costing of personnel expenditures through payroll accounting, verification, and effort certification; identify and process necessary corrections; approve effort statements.
Forecast, monitor, and report on scholarship fund utilization; provide projections and spending plans, ensuring alignment with endowment purposes and timely scholarship awarding.
Coordinate regular reviews, creation, and archiving of course fees; reconcile course fee revenue and expenses; develop and revise budgets, ensuring routine compliance reviews.
Oversee the fiscal management and monitoring of multiple grants associated with various Principal Investigators (PIs), ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
Provide fiscal management and monitoring of sponsored project activities and balances in compliance with University and regulatory agency policies and procedures.
Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant federal, state, business, and non-profit sponsors to offer guidance and interpretation of governing legislation, rules, and conditions.
Collaborate with Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA), Sponsored Financial Reporting (SFR), and external sponsors to manage sub-awards, reconcile inconsistencies, and facilitate award close-outs.
Coordinate the development of comprehensive annual budgets and enterprise financial system (EFS) budget entries; identify gaps in revenue and/or expenses.
Fiscal Reporting and Analysis:
Prepare detailed, customized, routine, and ad hoc reports from various sources for University, college, and unit leadership, and PIs, as needed.
Conduct budget-to-actual analyses of assigned sponsored and non-sponsored accounts. Analyze financial data for discrepancies, identify gaps in revenue and/or expenses, investigate, and recommend solutions.
Develop and present projections and trends to inform and advise stakeholders.
Service Delivery and Professional Development:
Ensure optimal service levels for assigned units through the FSO Service Level Agreement and related documentation.
Stay current and engage in continuing education and training opportunities related to University policy and best practices.
Participate in department, college, and University events, meetings, projects, and initiatives.
In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the Lead Financial Analyst 3 position includes responsibilities related to college-wide processes, training, mentoring, and supervisory duties.
Lead Financial Analyst (Level 3):
Provide oversight, monitoring, and training for college-wide business processes (e.g., scholarships, internal/external sales, effort certification, payroll accounting, sponsored projects/grants, certified approver, reporting, and data analytics).
Assigned to specific college-wide business processes as a subject matter expert; collaborate with management to ensure coordination and dissemination of new and changing policies and procedures.
Conduct training for:
accounting professionals, department administrators, preparers, and processors within the college.
Serve as a primary resource for process-related policy and procedure interpretation.
Engage in process improvement initiatives that impact the college or individual units.
Train and mentor new staff during the onboarding process.
Participate in and/or lead department, college-wide, and university-wide committees, implementation projects, task force initiatives, and established University-level defined roles and content expert groups.
Bachelor's degree plus two years of professional experience or a combination of related education and professional experience totaling six years.
Demonstrated experience in accounting/fund accounting, budget development, and/or other financial management.
Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, communities, and identities.
Preferred Qualifications
BA/BS degree in accounting, finance, business, economics, public administration, or a related field.
Experience in a higher education environment and/or sponsored research, grant organization/agency.
Experience in analyzing financial data, grant management, and monitoring complex budgets and contracts, forecasting/projecting, and auditing.
Advanced computer skills, including spreadsheet development and maintenance using Excel and web database reporting.
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage priorities, coordinate multiple assignments simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
Experience delivering high-level customer service, including proactive communication and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
Experience managing and prioritizing multiple tasks and working both independently and as part of a team.
Certified Approver (University of Minnesota specific credential, specific training/education offered once in the position).
