The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) oversees the effective distribution of electricity across extensive high-voltage transmission networks, coordinating power from numerous generation sources throughout the region.

The IT division at NYISO is seeking candidates for the position of Lead Windows Systems Engineer. This role involves the design, management, and administration of expansive multi-site and cloud-based Microsoft server and client infrastructures.

The Lead Windows Systems Engineer is accountable for system architecture, design, and execution; creation and installation of operating systems, firmware, and software packages; as well as upgrades, patching, system integrity, security, disaster recovery, and performance optimization. This professional will establish, maintain, and comply with server administration standards and user protocols. Furthermore, the Lead Windows Systems Engineer will guide and collaborate with project teams, application developers, and infrastructure colleagues as required, execute backup and restoration processes, and support audit initiatives while ensuring adherence to corporate and regulatory standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts advanced and complex tasks with minimal supervision, developing departmental work plans aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Leads functional or virtual teams, ensuring accountability for achieving team-wide goals while engaging with peer departments, business partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Exhibits exceptional proficiency with assigned technology platforms and possesses extensive knowledge of related information technologies and methodologies.
  • Represents the organization at external events, including conferences and seminars, and may author formal communications on behalf of NYISO.
  • Installs, patches, and upgrades Microsoft and VMware operating systems, hardware, and software packages.
  • Performs ongoing performance tuning and assessments of system infrastructure, optimizing resources effectively.
  • Architects, tests, implements, and supports system architectures and management technologies, encompassing both physical and virtual environments.
  • Facilitates capacity planning and system lifecycle management in collaboration with other experts.
  • Designs, tests, and implements complex solutions for high availability and failover capabilities, in partnership with the Business Continuity department.
  • Adheres to rigorous change management processes to mitigate risks to the computing environment, championing changes from initiation to deployment.
  • Provides technical support to software development, infrastructure, and IT operations teams.
  • Maintains regular communication with development and operational staff to ensure system integrity and security.
  • Designs and manages Microsoft systems (e.g., Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, M365) while complying with established standards and regulations.
  • Offers 24/7 technical support on a rotational basis, requiring advanced troubleshooting skills to restore production services promptly.
  • Mentors and trains junior Windows administrators.
  • Establishes and communicates server standards and policies.
  • Participates in ongoing strategic IT planning focused on Microsoft and VMware technologies.
  • Develops innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiency through automation.
  • Engages in procurement activities and supports contract management.
  • Participates in license management and compliance efforts.
  • Understands networking and storage technologies, contributing to planning and troubleshooting services.
  • Documents Microsoft and VMware system configurations and functions meticulously.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience as a Windows Server Administrator.
  • Preferred certifications include MSP, MCSE, Azure Certified Administrator, and VMware Certified Professional (VCP).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents and respond to inquiries from the business community.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret complex technical instructions.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Windows environments, including MS Office applications.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Microsoft administration and related technologies.
  • Thorough understanding of advanced networking and system backup concepts.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Batch, PowerShell, Python) is desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is typically moderate in noise level, with interactions occurring with staff and the public. Some travel may be necessary for meetings and training sessions. This position may require work during evenings, weekends, or holidays.
