Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Power Plant Supervisor to lead the operation of the City's Energy Production section at the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant, North City Water Reclamation Plant, Pump Station #2, and other outlying facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for administering and directing the operation of the power plant, planning, assigning, directing, and supervising the work of Power Plant Supervisors and subordinate staff, and developing preventive/corrective maintenance schedules for equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer and direct the operation of the power plant, including planning, assigning, directing, and supervising the work of Power Plant Supervisors and subordinate staff.
  • Develop preventive/corrective maintenance schedules for equipment, prioritize and assign repair/maintenance work, and perform special studies.
  • Develop and upgrade Power Plant equipment, manuals, drawings, and operating procedures using new technology, determine equipment and personnel needs for budgetary purposes, and manage section's budgets and contracts.
  • Research and prepare specifications for the purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment, develop, maintain, and prepare statistics and operating reports on plant's safety programs, operations, and training, and prepare power production data to be reported to government regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate activities and serve as liaison with other plant sections, divisional facilities, City departments, governmental regulatory reporting agencies, and utility companies, and prepare and present progress reports to management and/or to oversight committees and City Council as needed.
  • Perform supervisory duties which include training, rating, and evaluating the work performance of subordinates, and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • One year of full-time supervisory experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining large engines (600 horsepower or higher), high voltage electrical systems (440 volts or higher), or steam or hot water boilers (250 horsepower or higher).
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
  • Highly desirable: Successful completion of a state-accredited Apprenticeship Program in Electricity, Electronics Technology, Equipment Mechanics, or Marine Engineering, experience and training on Allen-Bradley PLC as Caterpillar Engine Controller, Emerson (Westinghouse) DCS, and SEL Relay for Electrical Switchgear, and experience and training with troubleshooting, repairing, and overhauling Caterpillar G3500 and G3600 series natural gas engines.
What We Offer

The City of San Diego offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including a 5% general wage increase effective 1/1/25, a 5% special salary wage increase effective 1/1/25, and a 5% special salary wage increase effective 1/1/26. Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). Senior Power Plant Supervisor employees may be required to work nights or unusual shifts for an extended period of time for which they may receive 5% additional pay, work overtime on a frequent basis, and work in confined spaces for which they may receive 5% additional pay.
